Mauretanien, Mali, Niger

Is there anybody who has been to Mauretania actually? The Michelin-Map shows a track leading from the greater area of Atar towards Tidjika. Is it possible to go there by 4x4? Which conditions I will find? And: Is there any chance to go further from Tichit to Oualata? What about safty in the south-east-region/border to Mali?
Second question: Is there any experience about immigration from Niger to Algeria via Assamaka or from Mali (Gao) to Algeria (Reggane)? I know about the regulations of guiding in Algeria, but I ask myself, how the Algeriens will act if I arrive from the south? I know about the trouble in the north of Niger, but I hope the situation will change and becoming calm.

Hello Heidi,

the guidebook "Mauretani au GPS" , Editions TAKLA MAKANE, describes the itineraries you asked for.
And yes, no particular issue to drive them with a well equiped 4x4 (at least 2 vehicles for safety).

>I ask myself, how the Algeriens will act if I arrive from the south?
Entry in Algeria at either Bordj Mokhtar, Tin Zaouatine or Assamaka/Ain Guezzam is possible and nothing unusual for Algerians.
I found entry and exit at Bordj Mokhtar very relaxed. It is nothing particularly difficult nor exciting. You should have your visa though.
From this spring experience I know that visa for Algeria were issued in Niamey and Agadez. No experience with Gao. But British travellers who applied for the visa in Bamako were refused the visa despite the letter of invitation.

Heidi,

If you search the sub-saharan section for the past six months there are several posts on the Atar-Tidjika route. Here are a few links:
