Marocco Piste: Tagounite - Foum Zguid

Hi,

I'm gointo to Marocco in September, in a 4WD, and I'm thinking about doing the piste that connects Tagounite to Foum Zguid. In have no GPS and I will be travelling alone.

What can you tell me about this piste? Should I do it? Is it difficult? Are there parts with sand? Should I bring a shovel with me?
Can anybody provide GPS waypoints?

Please note that I am refering to the piste that starts in Tagounite and heads northwest for a few km's (labeled 6961) before turning southwest, NOT the the one that starts south of Tagounite, near Mhamid (whitch I belive has lots of sandy parts, that I wouldn't want to run into).

By the way, do you know if there is cellphone coverage in this region and all the way to Foum Zguid?

Pistes change from month to month and conditions vary according to the weather. I have yet to do that piste, but when I asked Peter at Bikershome (www.bikershome.net) about it he said in his opinion it was better to cut across on one of the many tracks crossing Lac Inki.

My experience of cellphone coverage is that it is excellent on frequented pistes. When you can't get coverage it normally means you're lost.

We did this in March. It's very very rough, but hardly any sand, except near Erg Chegaga. There's no phone coverage on it. GPS not necessary as route is obvious. Start of piste is at the side of the fuel station at the north end of Tagounite. Big features of this route are the sand dunes, which the route skirts round, and the flat out blast across the Lac west of the dunes. Also the tremendous feeling of relief when you get to the other end with nothing having fallen off! If you want to do some dune bashing, they're easily accessible and people around if you get seriously stuck. There are guides who will take you through the dunes rather than going round on the stony track. Have a good trip.

I did the second half part of this track in October because of a storm we decided to avoid crossing chegaga and toock this track. It's not difficult to follow but this track is very stony, we did it by bike, we pass 6 or 7 jeep cherokee 30 km before Foum Zguid, they arrived at F Zguid one hour after us.
