Marocco maps and routes

I am planning a trip through France and Spain and into Marocco in May 2006 on an XRV650. I would like to get off tarmac as much as possible and take in M1 through 6 in Chris's book. Would be keen to know if anyone has a good route that can be done start to finish in 3 weeks. Also I would like to get some reasonable scale maps for navigation. Can anyone advise on which maps to buy?

Hi Talljohn
My love of Morocco lies in the Saharan East, far from all those well publicised tourist traps on the West. Morocco has a lot to offer, and it is all worth a visit.
Chris Scott’s book is essential reading and will give lots of invaluable info.
Have a look at my itinerary on this page (below) and see if it appeals to you:

Hello,
we did a 3 wweek tour in Marocco in april 2004, since it was our first trip we did 2/3 road 1/3 off Tarmac. Here is a link to some pics :

I probably have somewhere some gps tracks of the trip. Essential maps are michelin 742. for more precise map I have them on CD and did some print out of the regions needed. You have some excelent books here : http://www.extrem-sud.com/guides.html It's all in french but at least you will find detailed maps (small) and all the waypoints from their trip. For Marocco theses are bibles. We are planing another trip, a bit more sporty this next April, il will then have frech frech news on the states of routes. Our ittinerary is not finished yet, let me know if you want me to send you what I have so far.

Hi Talljohn,

I was thinking about something similar, except taking a ferry to Spain. If you'd like some company and aren't desperate to do the French thing. Let me know and we can work something out. I have four weeks and a tent.
cheers pb.

Big Bear/Punkbiker,

Thanks for the replies, and yes please BB i would love to see what you have so far. There are currently two of us taking the Portsmouth to St.Malo ferry on 13th April and we are planning to be in Algeciras about 5 days later. We plan to do mostly Piste taking in the M1 to M12 and a couple of other tracks I did in a Landrover about 6 years ago. This time we are both on old Africa Twins (XRV650).

I now have some USA aerial maps at 1:500,000 with lat and long shown, so a combination of the Michelin, GPS and these maps should be good enough for navigation.

Very happy to meet up if the timing suits either of you.

We are due back to st.Malo on 12th May.

For maps:

I used the IGN Carte Touristique 1cm:10km whilst doing all of the routes in Sahara Overland and quite a few more for my Morocco Pistes DVD.

This combined with the GPS points in Sahara Overland is all you need for a quick trip like yours imho, and it has grid markings. Keep in mind it's hard to get seriously lost in Morocco.

For a picture of the IGN map with most of these pistes marked on it, have a look at the Pistes Info page at:

Hi friends,
we will be at Morocco at mid-end of April. Two R1150GS/A and two R1200GS. All with a lot of offroad experiences. We´ve been once at Morroco about year ago, did some offroads from voyages4x4.com and returning again to see more and maybe try M5... Our bikes are nothing special on very soft sand, but we travel quite light and hope it will be OK this time. Maybe will be good to know about others in the same area. Just in case...

Tomas, Prague
