MAPS - CONFUSED !!

I'm after some 1:200,000 IGN maps for Mauritania referred to in Chris Scott's book, namely Chinguetti, Oudane, Atar, Guelb er Richat.

The Darr Expeditions website lists IGN 1:200,000 maps but the names of the sheets are completely different. Can someone explain please ?

Ron

Hi Ron, I'm afraid I can't enlighten you on the map names; although the French often seem to change stuff without telling you why or when. I can open your choices up a little; if it's IGN maps you're after then why not get it from the source, at http://www.ign.fr/fr/PI/activites/ca...rtotheque.html and http://www.ign.fr/fr/GP/cartes/etranger.html there's stuff to be had. For other varieties of maps (the Russian ones are said to be good, if a little old) take a look at http://www.equip-raid.fr/cat/P14/205.html at the bottom of the page there is "Page
suivante" to go to other types of map. It's all in french, but if you're coming to ex-French Africa the practice will do you no harm.
Hope it helps
Luke

You could try www.themapshop.co.uk , they are extremely helpful and faxed me a copy of the index (ie a map of Africa with the map numbers on it) which lets you work out which ones you want, and where they cover.

Ehhh this map sheet thing is confusing with Darr! They certainly sell digitised maps of Mori of those names on CD as part of the Mauritania 1:200k series but not sure about the printed sheets. I had a long email conversation with them about this and ended up getting the CD as I can print the maps I needed out very cheaply – 1 sheet at A3 shows enough detail to drive around with and a couple of A4 enlargements of the bits your interested in would see you through.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
