Crossed from Mauritania to Mali at GPS cordinates:

N 15 30 46
W 009 29

The border post on the Mauritanean side is called Medbougou (check spelling). A small outpost in the middle of the savannah. The Malian side is more developed with a heavily corrugated road / track from Nioro-Djema-Kolokani etc on to Bamaoko.

Its a rather out of the way border crossing but the savannah is beautiful and you can pick up the road (or what is left of it) at Tintane (or before)and drive West to Kiffa and on.

Makes a change from Nema.

Re carnet you dont need one for Mauritania they just put the vehicle details in your passport, nor for Morocco for that matter.

Hi Romain!

You can cross the border to Mauritania from Mali everywhere do you like, there are no restrictions aboud Bordercrossing. Just last February we drove from Timbuktu straight on over Lac Faguibine and Ras el Ma and we are entering Mauritania at Nbeiket el Ahouach its around 150 km north from Fassala Nere). In Nema you have to do the paperwork at the police and custom. I gave the customer in Mauritania the Laisence Passe from Mali - he stamped and give his signature to it - and everythings was okay. The visa we have got all ready in Germany, so we could avoid to hang around in Bamako and loosing time. (I am prefer the Desert). But allso in some another village like Nema, Tichit, Tidjikja you have to make a report by the Police, when you show up there. They like to stamp youre passport to, and looking for some presents. But the Border from Mauritania to Algeria and Morocco its close, with one exception of Guerguarat. They going to build up a new road just throu the field of mines, and there are no more convoy in the west sahara. When you are in Mauritania, the Atar region and Chinguetti are the highligts of Mauretania.

sorry for my english

Great fun in Africa

Zdravo!
I want to add something what Desertrunner already write. Yes, it is possible to drive from Mali to Morocco thru Mauritania. I exit Mali by the city Nioro du Sahel (I didn’t done any border formalities, may be I should) and entered Mauritania by city Ayoun el’ Altros, where we do all border formalities, like insurance for the car and temporally importation for the car – they just write down in the passport. Chief of “border stop” is nice guy, first was very strict and serious and after when we eat together he show us the real face. Say hallo to him from two Slovenian guys in blue 2 cv - Diane.
Visa for Mauritania in Bamako was no problem. Problem was visa for Morocco in Nouakchott. They say that because we are Slovenians we are not in theirs direction, so we can’t get the visa! And we did not have it! They say it is only for Moroccan in Mauritania. Try to get it in Bamako! Maybe is for France citizens different, don’t now. We have little problem to come in Morocco without valid visa. We have old one, three months old and on border post Al Gargarat they didn’t saw, that we don’t have double entrance on our visa. They find it later, near Al ‘Ayoun, but we talk it out without bribery.
For next time I know.
Save travels and a lot of adventure

Zdravo!
We didn’t go with convoy. We join together with one English Yamaha driver, who had the GPS points of so called “Taxi rout“ from Chris Scott’s book or somewhere. It was a good team. He scout the passages for our slow 2cv. And we didn’t go to Nouadhibou; we go directly to the Moroccan border at fort Al Gargarat. This is possible if you have enough fuel, because next fuel stop is 100 km before Dakhla. Why making a curve if you can go straight to the border. But, you must have enough fuel!!
If you want to go with convoy, go around the Nouakchott’s hotels and I am shore you will find some guys to join them. Do not bother with this. Or you just wait for locals or some tourists with GPS who is going the some way, by the entrance in national park in a fishing village named Nouamghar. It is just ca. 200 km north on a beech from Nouakchott.
Enjoy and have fun
gregor
