Looking to join a trans-Saharan 4x4 trip as official photographer.
 

No idea if this is a reasonable request or not, but I'm very keen to get involved in a trans-Saharan trip, but simply don't have the time or money to buy my own Land Rover and do all the planning. For that reason, I'm looking at the next best option, which is to join an team existing team.

Clearly, this is a tricky subject, as I know I wouldn't entertain accommodating a perfect stranger on any trip that I'd planned unless there was something in it for me. Hence, I'd be looking to pay an appropriate amount towards the project and offer my services as photographer.

I'm a seasoned traveller, having spent the last fifteen years visiting various war zones, and documenting a couple of nomad groups. I know my way around a vehicle, having rebuilt a couple of engines way back in my youth, and I have fairly good first-aid and survival training (ex-DoE award leader), so I'm confident that I can add some value to an expedition.

I've not been around the HUBB for quite some time, but used to post under the name of Mad Dog (forgot my password and have a new email address, so it was easier to just re-register).

Anyway, if anyone is interested in discussing this further with me, or indeed just tell me that I've no chance; please speak up.

Just sounding out the possibilities and what's going down at the moment.

Never posted too much here, as I've been running my own "dangerous places" forum all this time, and I've always been into hitching and public transport when I'm in country, so the HUBB wasn't something I could contribute much towards.

Do you have anything constructive to offer?

and im sure if you read enough posts on here you will find that YES, I have plenty to offer that is constructive and have also been praised by other HUBB members to that effect.

The trouble with forums is, as with email, sentiment doesn't get carried too well.

I'm a well-travelled 40 year-old, used to travelling alone, or with others, and I have no doubt that I can bring a lot to the table if there's anything going down. If a good opportunity comes along in north Africa, then I'll seriously consider it. Just need to test the ground first though, hence my posting here. I've lurked on the Hubb for ages, just seemed as good a time as any to poke my head above the radar once again.

Just to be totally clear, I'm not writing off the possibility of doing it with my own vehicle, and have approached a couple of people about it. My biggest obstacle is the time that I would have in which to complete the trip. Unfortunately, family and work commitments can only be so flexible in 2008, so unless something just right comes along, it's all going to be a non-starter anyway.

Great stuff. I wish I could help you but I am looking North toward the Canadian Arctic and ice rather than the sand of the Sahara.

I have traveled a fare amount in Burma/Myanmar should you ever wish to do an article on the lives of the IDP I can offer some insight.

I'd love to hit the Canadian Arctic, but last time I enquired about the cost of flights to Resolute, I almost fell of my chair! I already photographed parts of East Greenland and a whole load of Swedish Lapland, enough to know how much I love the Arctic, but you need bottomless pockets to do that region properly.

Burma appeals, but maybe when I have more time on my hands, as that situation deserves more than just another freelance Journo's take.

If the Sahara thing doesn't come together, I have one eye on the Kazakh Eagle Hunters of Western Mongolia.
