Libya - Wadi Maktandush

I'm planning a six week trip to Libya with a few friends next year - all the usual spots in SW Libya, including the Akakus, dune lakes, Murzuk, Wam an Nemus etc..

We also planned to visit the rock art sites at Wadi Maktandushas - I'd read they're the best. However, recently I've heard that flash flooding has damaged this area and that I'll see equally good rock art down in the Akakus.

Does anyone know better?

I imagine the access track may have got washed out but it's hard to think they're just going to give up on Wadi Mat forever. Floods happen all the time. Sounds like tour operator excuses.

The Akakus is better known for paintings but Wadi Mat is the most accessible of the Messak's many engraving sites and if you have 6 weeks then a day trip there out of Germa is well worthwhile, even if it's quicker to walk the last few kms. In fact that will make it even better! It will top out a great visit to the Fezzan.

In the Messak-Mathedous you find large scale engravings that are thought to be substantially older than the paintings of the Akakus. The Mathendous (and In Galgien a few kms further up the same valley) are amont the most important Saharan rock art sites, certainly not to be missed if you are interested in the subject. The engravings are high up on the rocks flanking the valley, could not have been affected by the floods.

All great reasons to go. Thanks guys. I look forward to walking the last few km's!
