Libyan Visa


We are pleased to inform you that we can guarantee you a tourist visa on arrival, either at Tripoli Airport or at any of the two land borders with Tunisia and Egypt. The process is very simple and takes about ten working-days to complete, as follows:

Email us scans of your passport bio page
Fully complete our secure booking form

What will happen next:

The first thing we do is check your completed booking form. If the booking form was completed incorrectly then we cannot apply for the visa.
Once we make sure that you have fully and correctly completed the booking form we will use these documents to apply for the "Visa Approval".
The visa approval will then be used to issue you with the actual visa stamp on arrival at the airport or the land border.
If you will be arriving by plane then we need to send you a copy of this approval a few good days before arrival as you will need it before you are allowed to board your plane.
If you will be arriving via the Tunisian or Egyptian border then you will not need a copy, as your escort will have the original with him when he meets you at the border.

Passport Notes:

Please make sure your passport does not have an Israeli stamp or visa.
Please make sure your passport contains at least two blank pages.
Please make sure your passport is valid for at least six months when you leave Libya.
Please note that passport Arabic translation is no longer required, and therefore there is no need to provide it.

Vehicle Costs: Logbook or V5 Registration Document (or V5C Registration Certificate): Updated September 2010:

The following vehicle charges are also required and are not included in the above price. They are here for your information to help you form an idea of how much you would expect to pay to the Libyan border authorities.
There are four charges you need to pay:

Vehicle Charges: a flat fee payable for every vehicle brought into the country:

Motorbikes: 75 LYD
Car (ordinary): 150 LYD
4WD vehicle: 150 LYD
Saloon cars & 4WD with tinted back windows (privacy glass): 251 LYD
Double & Single Cabin cars (with box at the back): 251 LYD
Minibus: 250 LYD
Lorries, trucks and other large cargo vehicles: 351 LYD

Car Insurance: usually between 10 and 30 LYD per a vehicle, for 15 days, depending on insurance company, duration, and vehicle type.

Licence Plate: about 15 Libya Dinars, (plus 100 LYD refundable deposit, which you will get back when you leave the country). To make things easier at the other end of the country (on exit), we normally pay this deposit for you on arrival and keep the receipt to claim our money back after you leave the country. You can, of course, pay it yourself, if you wish, and then queue on exit to claim it back.

Carnet de Passages:
Free if you have an international carnet. If you do not have an international carnet, then you need to pay one of the following amounts. (Please note that we have left these prices in US Dollars because the amount payable is the same in Euro or Dollars: for example you can pay either 30 Dollars or 30 Euro for your bike - the choice is yours; and therefore it is best to bring some Dollars so that you can pay the carnet charges in Dollars, otherwise you will end up paying the same figure in other currencies regardless of value.)

Payment details:

Full payment is required on arrival, in cash, in Euro, English Sterling or US Dollars. Please note that small denominations (like 5, 10 and 20 pound, dollar or euro paper notes) are not accepted by most banks in Libya except the central banks in the capital Tripoli, and therefore please make sure you ask your bank for larger notes like 50 or 100 notes. Usually no deposit is required, but we might request a deposit payment in cases where large number of hotel rooms, or expensive hotel rooms, are requested before arrival.
The amount shown in Libyan Dinars (if any) is the amount to pay on arrival, converted to the foreign currency of your choice according to the exchange rates current on the day of arrival. This means that the amount shown in Euro during your correspondence with us is for your information only and that the correct amount to pay in Euro or Sterling or US Dollar will have to be calculated on the day of arrival according to the exchange rates current on that day.
You also can make a part payment or full payment in advance via Bank Transfer if you prefer; just let us know and we will send you the details. Travellers cheques are becoming part of the past in Libya and it can be very hard to find a bank in Libya that accepts them.; and when you do find a bank that accepts them, then you need to provide a document showing your name(s) and the list of the cheques' serial numbers, normally obtained from the bank that issued the cheques, before you can cash them. Please note that withdrawals from ATM's in Libya are limited to a certain daily amount determined by your bank for security reasons and therefore you need to contact your bank before departure to ask for a higher limit if you need to use this option. The usual current daily amount varies from 400 to 1000 Libyan Dinars depending on type of card.

3- Guide with his car at 300 Euros for whole trip.

Hello All,

Just back from a very good trip to SE Libya (Jebel Uweinat), a little update on present conditions:

Visa: no problems whatsoever, the visa authorisation was waiting for us at the airport, procedure was quick and smooth. I had some concerns as our party arrived at different times and different flights with only one issued authorisation paper, but these were unfounded. At present, it seems visa/entry, at least at Tripoli airport, is a non-issue.

Police registration: 10' formality at Tripoli/Sebha, all friendly and quick.

Permits to go south from Kufra: again 10', our drivers could sort it out, we did not even have to go to the military office, only the passports were taken.

Checkpoints: No delays, a couple of 'Kef Halek's exchanged then we were on our way. To allay any concerns, I left our passports at the police post at Ain Zueia, from that point we could go where and when we pleased for ten days around Uweinat, no restrictions.

Overall I can say that this was my smoothest experience ever in Libya from an 'official' perspective, even minor annoyances were almost completely absent. A stark contrast to present conditions in Egypt.

We too used Aboubaker Aboukhasem as our agent (Ghadames Tours), can only reccommend him, by Libyan standards exceptionally efficient and professional, both in arrangements and communication.

Finally, I have done the trip using Abubaker services because he was the cheapest. The final figures are:

1- Visa at the border at 30 Euros.

2- Passport registration at 10 Euros.

3- Insurance at 10 Euros per moto.

4- Libian nnumber plate at 75 Euros per moto.

5- Libian border tax at 55 Euros per moto.

6- Guide with his car at 250 Euors for whole trip.

You have to pay the hotel and food for the guide during the trip, and that is 50 euros daily.

The total amount was 580 euros just for riding straight from the Egyptian border to the Tunisian one. Fortunately, I visited Magna Leptis and Sabratah, otherwise I could say I had been lost in the Nothing for 3 days.




That is the schedule.

First Night: Tobruk, just 140 km from the border (worth to visit because the War Cemeterys). Alfalkak hotel:40 dinars, clean, friendly, wifi.

Second Night: 800 km ride just to see sand all around. Night at Surt, big hotel but not nice, 40 dinars, not wifi nor friendly ambient.

Third Night: Aboubaker insisted in having night at Tripoli (420km from Surt). He lives there and wanted to sleep at his home. He charged me 50 euros for acomodation anyway

I asked him of looking for a hotel beside the promenade (Tripoli is a pretty nice city) and he took me to a 4 stars one in front of the sea. 104 dinars. Too much.

I have to say that he works Ok and every paperwork was done in minutes. I got into and out Libya in a very short custom time.

By the way, the country is so cheap so I spent very little money in food, accomodation and petrol. In the other hand, 50 euros daily for the guide diet is a fortune, but there are the rules. You take them or not visiting Libya.

Do you have contact details (email/and or tel no.) for Abu Bakr as I am planning to travel through Libya from Tunisia to Egypt either during the spring or summer vacation.

Also did you have to pay him in advance, or when you met him at the border?

Did you have to forward him any of you passport or motorcycle details in advance, or just produce them when you met him at the border.

Interesting questions.

You have to send him scanned copy of yor passport (compulsory) and bike documents (helps to get permit import). Meanwhile he is waiting for you, he gets the entry documents.

About the money, you pay when you are in, not in advance. Even you do not have to pay the whole bill the first day.

In Libya the ATM works pretty well (Visa)

As Sam suggests you another company, did what I did, write to few of them and try to get the best quote.

If you write to Aboubaker, tell him you got his details from me because he promised to me to make an special offer for bikers
