Libya Visa
A tour operator in Libya telling me, it’s OK to get a visa at the border when you coming from Egypt.
If i have a copy on the visa confirmation and a representative met me with the original. And of course a Arabic stamp in the passport. Does anyone know if there is any truth in it. Do not know what to think anymore. |
I cannot say, if such is true or not. But it would be against the rules which are applied now since several months. I recommend that you pick up the visa at the Libyan Embassy in your country of residence. This ensures that you can travel and you have not the risk to not be allowed to enter Libya (at least a fairly reduced one :-))

We did this coming the other way this Jan ie from Tunisia to Libya with a chap called Hadi from a tour company beginning with F. We crossed into "no man's land' ie between the two borders and called the guide on our mobile and he duly arrived with all the plates and paperwork within the hour. HOWEVER - we had been ultra clear in each and every e mail that we wanted a transit visa only to be issued with a tourist visa and a compulsory guide costing 100 Euros per day with a minimum set charge... We had no choice but to stump up but were better prepared for out Egypt to Libya leg and had the visa in our passports ready which we organised from Egypt without and of the new conditions at all but a several week wait... Good luck - doable but patience testing... |
Seems that Libya has changed the visa application rules once more, respectively came back to the older regulation where tourists can get a 'visa upon entry'.

I just been to Lybia last April. We did a self-organized trip by bikes. We did arrange visas from home with the aid of a local agency. They were very good (we travelled for 2000 km in the desert) and they costed about 80 euro per day per pick-up. If you interest i can provide you their contact numbers.. Cheers Nic |
Dont know if this means to back to as it was as Kuno says, or a genuine, no-strings visa on the border like Mk and Tunisia - the latter seems a bit unlikely.
Ch Libya eases visa restrictions 2009-08-06 Libya on Wednesday (August 5th) eased visa restrictions for tourists. Under the move to boost tourism, visitors will be able to obtain visas at the point of entry. "[A]uthorised service providers can also obtain visas for tourists, in addition to the issuance of visas by Libya's embassies around the world," the Libyan General People's Committee announced on its website. Libya's 2008-2012 tourism programme aims for 1.5 million tourists per year. |

Any news of whether Americans, or Swiss Nationals, are now allowed a tourist visa? |
Complications remain in place for Americans and Swiss - but it is not unsurmountable.
Presently, not only are we back to the 'original' visa on arrival (as long as the processing has been done in the days/weeks before), but even that the translation is no longer required. We are advising to get the translation stamp anyway (it's free), in case the rules change again last minute. Safe travels, Sam. |
Regarding Americans, I just read in an agency newsletter: "Libya has been keeping us on our toes with their constant changes in visa procedures and we are told that American passport holders will be allowed in imminently!..."
