Libya Overland from Egypt

Hello everyone, here's my first post so fingers crossed...

Does anyone have current information about crossing into Libya from Egypt. I'll be on my GSA and from all accounts it's just not an option... The bike will have a carnet and I travel on a New Zealand passport.

Libya travel and tours have given me some great information, but unfortunately they don't like my chances. Anyone have any idea??

We are planning the same route. Genoa to Tunis, Libya into Egypt.
We are in contact with Tidwa tours to arrange our visas.

A handful of people managed to pull off the Tunis to Egypt route along the coast in the past 1-2 years, however I don't recall anyone managing to do it in the opposite direction. It appears that problem lies mainly on the Egyptian side, so if you attempt this route, have a good plan B for the likely case that you are stopped at the Egyptian (or Libyan) side of the border.

Be prepared that any advance arrangements, permits, visas etc. are subject to 'interpretation', and the on ground situation may change from day to day. The Sollum border crossing is a long standing contender for the worst bureaucratic nightmare on this planet, and the events of the past 3 years did not make it any easier...

Oh, and if you do manage to pull it off, definitely tell us about it...

No outcome yet but I've found another company that I'm waiting to hear back from. Libya Tourist Visa on Arrival

Tidwa have been helpful, but he's not sure about coming in overland so has sent me to the embassy in Cairo. Hopefully I'll get something a bit more solid so I'll let you know.

Andrasz, you have a good point about it changing so this could all be for nought for when I eventually get there.

Twotwins, are you on the road now? I'm freighting my bike from Sydney to Jo'burg at the start of June.

To my knowledge the visa on arrival process only works for arrival by air, have not heard of anyone having such an arrangement for land borders, but there has to be a first time for everything... The situation is very fluid, so what is true today may turn for the better (or much worse) in a matter of weeks or even days.

I am sure I recall a couple in recent years, so not impossible, but rarely done.
I get the feeling it's as much because most overland traffic is east- and southbound, flowing from Europe to SA.

We did it in 2012, both ways with no beauracratic problems at all (in fact no problems of any sort). Even The Sollum dance seemed easier than previous visits!!

However things may be a bit different now .................things are likely to change with no warning, but until somebody tries it, who knows!

Already in Egypt from Sudan!!

We were told at the customs office in Aswan that the border with Egypt was closed for some days because of problems with Egyptian truck drivers.

Anybody knows if it is still closed??

No we are not on the road right now. we are leaving the Netherlands on octobre 13th and expect to be in Tunis on the 18th.

We are in Cairo and have no idea how to get to Europe?? We have to decide.

Are Visas really needed?? Has anybody go through Libya in the last week??

Two weeks ago, they told us that no visa was needed for transit to Tunisia, now people said yes.

Any information updated??

Dear Riders
I been in contact with an adventure person in Libya, taking his advice on the current situation in Libya for one of the Hubb riders. so his advice was not to enter on those days a lot of check points from the villages people and the security is zero%, and even he was at the airport and all the roads is closed and he was not able to reach home. I agree with all of the above that many adventure riders been into this route before but at this time its 100% recommended if you care about your life.

Last Friday heavy fighting broke out, first in Benghazi, between Islamist militias and regular army units loyal to the former army chief, which then spread to Tripoli over the week-end. Scores killed on both sides, Saudis and Algeria have already evacuated their embassies.

By the sound of it Libya needs to be struck off any plans for the forthcoming months, perhaps longer. Even if things go quiet, the situation will remain tense, unresolved and totally unpredictable.
