Libya - January 2012 - Border Updates and Queries (Misrata/Adjabiya/Benghazi)

Hey hey!

Sam and I (www.chasinghorizons.co.uk www.facebook.com/chasinghorizons) are still in Italy at the moment near Salerno, but in the next week crossing to Tunis and then heading towards Libya where we aim to cross to Egypt (around January 24th 2013 give or take a day or two/border issues)

We will use this thread to update as and when we can on the road what the travel is like, but if there's anyone with additional news or help/advice for us we would really appreciate any help here too!

Our planned stops through Libya:

TUNISIA BORDER to SABRATA or TRIPOLI

Head to LEPTIS MAGNA and then onto MISRATA.

MISRATA to BENGHAZI (potential to stay at Adjabiya - see below)

BENGHAZI to TUBRUQ

TUBRUQ to Egyptian Border

Queries:

We have researched various hotels and places to stay for the above route and plan on booking next week but if anyone has any recommendations for places suitable for Sam and I (note, engaged couple but we may or may not have a marriage certificate available should we need to utilise it :)) + 2 bikes then please do let us know in advance.

ADJABIYA:
We have been trying to do some research on this town and are unable to find out much more than the odd bit of information which is potentially outdated. Does anyone know what the situation is like in Adjabiya and whether there is any suitable places for Sam and I + two bikes to stay? If not Adjabiya anywhere between Misrata and Benghazi?

If we cannot find anywhere to stay between Masrata and Benghazi or alternatively Tubruq we will have to do the trip in one leg which is looking at around 10.5 hours or 13 hours. With a couple of stops (call of nature and quick snack to keep energy levels up) and depending on the condition of the roads it may take longer.

Our concern is ending up riding at night - something we are doing everything to avoid. If we can leave Misrata at the break of dawn we can potentially get a good 10hours of sunlight... any advice or again recommendations for this strip then that would be mega :)

CURRENT UPDATES:
From the travel company we have utilised (Libya Travel and Tours) our understanding is there's been some problems at the Libya/Tunisia border due to Trucks crossing with goods they should not have. Rumour has it, the border has been shut at various times so we are expecting delays. Apparently every day is different! We will let you know when we get there!

As what seems to be standard, we have been told to avoid stopping between Misrata and Benghazi due to there being no supposed safe location.

We will update when we can but if anyone has any kind of advice in the interim or ideas of locations to stay that would be superb and greatly appreciated :)

Keep smiling and speak soon :)

I think that you may well struggle to do Misrata - Tobruk in daylight.
I was there this time last year in my Landcruiser and if I recall correctly (I can check my track log) we stayed at Leptis, left very early morning (it was still dark as we passed Misrata) and arrived Tobruk after a couple of hours night driving.
As a guide, we stopped in Ajdabya for some grub, and at the fuel station halfway along theAjdabya / Tobruk road it was just starting to get towards sunset.

There are (read were in Jan & Feb 2012) numerous checkpoints, all of which can add to your time, also beware of some of the potholes in the road from burned out cars / tanks/ shells etc. These were not a problem in the Landcruiser.......but you dont fall off that!

Plus you will have to factor in the extra time on fuel stops etc.

We were travelling pretty fast (as is the LIbyan way!), but doing it on 2 wheels will be a different matter, especially as you tire a bit.

No need to book hotels, just ask around & someone will direct you somewhere, I can give you co ordinates of hotels we have stayed at on various trips in Leptis, Misrata, Sirte, Benghazi, Tobruk (not sure if they are all still standing though) or do as we did on our return journey when we spent much more time in Libya, pull off the road somewhere secluded & camp, we had no problems

Hey Guys, look forward to hearing how you get on. We will be taking same route near the end of Feb (3x DR350s)

Would you be able to tell me abit more about how you got on with getting hold of your Libyan business visa and how much you paid.

Thanks and safe travels

Archie
