Libya, Egypt

Desert enthusiast, with own V8 range rover Classic looking to travel to libya/ egypt for 2 - 3 weeks next year. Would like to hear from anyone interested in coming along. I am particularly intersted in visiting some of the World War 2 battlefields,(especially El Alamein and the Qattara Depression), and ploughing through one or two sand seas.

Would also like to hear from anyone going out there and would likewise consider another vehicle tagging along.

Have just spent 8 weeks travelling southern africa, and Ive only been back a week and the travel bug has hit again.

"especially El Alamein and the Qattara Depression"

In El Alamein, better only visit the few secure (from land mines) battle fields. Besides venturing off road isn’t all that interesting because most of the landscape is featureless gravel. Things get more interesting the closer you get to Siwa a bit to the south.

The unique Qattara Depression should be visited. Not only because of it’s historical ww2 significance but because of it’s unique eco system. A qualified guide is essential and I’m not speaking about a Bedouin with a 2wd truck. A guide properly equipped with navigation and recovery equipment is essential as you can get stuck easily if you venture just a few meters from the correct tracks. A trip like this should be enjoyable not a grueling exercise in vehicle extraction. I recommend either SaharaPioneer.com or Zarzora.com . Both of them can either take you along in their vehicles or guide you with your own vehicle. Tell them I sent you.

The Great Sand Sea shouldn’t be tackled with just one vehicle so you might want to contract the guide to combine both places if you haven’t found a suitable traveling companion.

Give me a call when you arrive in Egypt. Maybe we can get together for a drink.

There is a group of 15 or so of us Brits based in Cairo with 5 or 6 vehicles, mainly Defenders and Grand Cherokees, we go off road quite a bit and will be heading to El Alamein to see the bunker complex as well as east and south off road round the deserts in the New Year (Gilf Kebir looming). Rangeys welcome! Get in touch here or you can ring me at home in the UK, I fly back for a fortnight in 3 days. (a group will be offroading in snows of the the Dales and the Peak District if you want to link up)
