Libya and alcohol

Hi all - not posted on here before but have been reading the forum for quite a while - wonder if I might ask for some advice on a bit of a touchy subject..:ninja:

I'm going to be crossing from Tunisia into Libya at Christmas with some mates (we're doing it in Land Rovers) - obviously as it's Christmas it wouldn't be quite the same without a bottle of wine or two to wash down the tinned turkey :whistling:

Is it a realistic prospect to conceal a little bit, or are border crossings normally accompanied by a vehicle search?
Wouldn't normally be so concerned, but we'll be spending three weeks there- can't remember the last time I went three weeks without a beer

Thanks for any help!

Booze cruise?

Hi Eightpot
I joined a large French group to cross Awbari Dunes in 2005 - we were all LOADED with booze... Wine boxes, beers, spirits, I can't think how we all found our way back home!
A Frog isn't going to be told he can't have his evening aperitif...
There was no search on the way in, only the usual burocratic stuff, form filling etc to contend with.
Last year we went DRY and we took no booze, nothing (it did us no harm!)
Still, there was no search on the way in.
Both times we were searched on the way out for artefacts, neolithic remains and other items of cultural inheritance.
IMHO take your booze and be prepared to lose it with good will, if necessary
Happy Christmas...

Thanks Kitmax -
I reckon if I stash some at the back of the car underneath piles of luggage and recovery gear nobodys going to make the effort anyway :wink2:

I'd planned on having to forgo beer in favour of something less bulky and easier to hide, but there's nothing better than cracking open a cold one after a dusty days drive

PS - if anyone from the Libyan customs and excise is reading this, I'll be driving a, er, red Toyota, not a Land Rover.

Few of us went earlier this year. No search was done, even though we were kept at the border for 5 hours.
Store it in a "few cans here, few cans there" kind of way, if your searched they may not find it all. Be prepered to be asked numerous times for your alcohol, they know most will have some.
