LIBYA: 5 days transit visa issued - done!

Am now back in Blighty after driving from Cairo via North coast of Libya, Tunisia, Italy and France.

Applied for transit visa in Cairo, took several weeks as sent to Tripoli, 2 people and one vehicle. Received in passport and managed to gain entry and crossing with no major problems or need for any baksheesh etc.

We entered Libya on 28th July and camped rough with no probs for the 5 days.

We did have a chap to do all the running around for us and chasing for us as he is Egyptian and my Arabic is limited.

The point is it CAN be done WITHOUT the need for finger prints or bank accounts etc.

All the officials and Libyans we encountered were friendly although steeped in red tape and no-one asked for baksheesh, throughout...

I have the tell no for the Egyptian chap who did the running around and calling etc - I have known him for 4 years whilst living in Egypt and he is honest, fair and trustworthy with a will to help and is a fountain of knowledge on Cairo etc.

GOOD LUCK

Glad to hear it Nib; I take it you did not need an escort?

Fyi, for all it's complications I don't think Libya has ever had a reputation for baksheesh.

To confirm, Libya is not a place where bribes are either asked or expected - you'll not be popular if you try it either!Safe travels, Sam.One other little thought, if your budget allows it, please do try to get a normal visa and get down to the south of the country - truly an incredible place and a 'world away' from the north coast.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
