fantastic
i was fearing havign to get it before hand (6 weeks or more from US embassy so i hear) or batteling Cairo to get to the Embassay.

This is what i will do!

er, what is 'LOI'

and know anything about that Elba National park on the Red Sea, west of you, as seen in google maps?

Tenere99 23 Aug 2012 13:10

LOI

An LOI is a Letter Of Introduction. A piece of paper obtained from your own embassy bearing the stamp of that embassy and a few lines of text along the lines of " we extend warmest greetings to the government of Sudan this is to introduce etc etc." In my case the u.k embassy no longer issue them so I had to get a letter stating that they no longer issue letters. Apparently this works just as well however after paying $80 at the u.k embassy in Cairo I found I didn't even need the bloody thing!
BE AWARE however if you are a u.s citizen that obtaining a Sudanese visa can be very difficult at the moment. I have read of many Americans refused of late, mostly in Cairo admittedly.
I have no idea why this is. Cheers chief.

I know nothing of the location you mentioned on the Red Sea. Try Lonely Planet thorn tree forum.

Anybody applied for a Sudan visa with a UK passport more recently than Aug 2012?
Still easy?
1 day wait? 3 days?
LOI still not necessary? (I'd hate to have to go all the way back to Cairo to get the letter from the British Embassy)

Thanks.

Hi,
Did you enter Egypt via Israel / Jordan - and if so, were there any questions / issues re Israeli stamps in the passport or on the Carnet when entering Sudan?

tadhg123 7 Aug 2013 12:27

Two friends with UK passports got their visas in Aswan in late June 2013. 1 day wait. No loi required (they had it from the british embassy in Cairo but didn't need to produce).

MakMake sure you have the embassies new location.

Thanks for the info. Just what I wanted to hear. I'll try the same in Sept.

So, my flights to Egypt have been cancelled, I now have to try and the challenge of getting a Sudanese visa in London, in one month.
Has anybody done this, and can recommend a company that can help with invites, etc?

Thanks a lot.

We looked into the same thing and didn't have a lot of luck I'm afraid. Even the London Embassy itself says it will take 4-6 weeks. See here...
Entry Visa

We've used avery good agency in London for other consular services while we've been on the road (RF Consular Services, Staines) and they checked last week for us whether it could be done by an agency. They were told that all applications in London must be handed in personally and may involve an interview.

The Embassey's own website suggests using sudan.net (Travel and Tourism in Sudan) for a list of local travel agents who can help with introduction letters, but I couldn't find the list on their site.

This guy in Sudan has been recommended to me as reliable and straightforward by 3-4 overlanding people who have used him. He may be able to help you...

Three Scottish lads we crossed the road into Sudan with obtained their Sudanese visas in London. You can find their contact details on the Africa overland network under TGAC or the Gentleman's adventure club. They're home or close to so should be able to reply quick

If flying in is an option, it might be possible to arrange for tourist visas to be picked up at Khartoum airport. Moez or Medhat Mahir can help, see link to contact them above. This spring everyone in our party did it this way, much less pain than going through embassies. Flat fee of US$100 for all nationalities. Of course this is not an option for overlanders...
