Now it seems they have been killed.

France confirms two French journalists killed in Mali | Reuters

A day later the French military are keen to stress they didn't pursue the abductors, presumably with reference to the January 2011 event out of Niamey which also ended in the deaths of the two French hostages.

They were experienced journalists with good knowledge of the region. French Serval troops would not take them to Kidal, but they probably bought a ride with Minusma (African) troops. Then they spent several days in Kidal (mistake), before they were kidnapped, unguarded, just next to the garrison. Bah.
How could they be shot when they were potentially worth millions of €?

I understand these killed journalists were already 6 days in Kidal. Way too long I would say. The longer you stay, the more dangerous it gets

Some say they weren't shot, they had their throats cut.

Three of the four kidnappers are identified as Aqim members, several arrests have been made. The sad thing is that a bunch of locals are involved in different ways

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
