Insurance in Morocco
 

Hi all,
Just hoping to pick your brains.....
I'm off to Morocco and W Sahara in Feb (4x4) and my insurer will do me a green card to cover Morocco, which is a bonus.
I'll be traveling with a friend at first, then swapping him for my sister later in the trip. Niether are covered on my insurance. It would be easy to get them both put on the green card, but costs a bit more than i'd hoped.
So....once in Morocco (i'd drive all of europe) would it be enough to just have a green card in the name of the registered owner of the truck and let the others drive, or is that a big no no??
I bought insurance at the border last time but can't remember if we were both listed. I'm thinking it was only me on the paper work then, but can't be sure.
Any thoughts?

If the green card lists the 'named drivers' then I guess they will have to be on it. Can't imagine it covers you for theft or vandalism!

Personally I managed ok without any insurance there, but was lucky. One of the group hit a kid when the child swerved in front of him and brought the pair of them down. Luckily he had cover, but in the end the Police said it was the kids fault and that seems to have been the end of it.

I had planned to get insurance there, but when I finally found an office in Fez, they wanted crazy money, and for me to go back the next day to collect the certificate. Hence not bothering...

The cover would be 'third party, fire and theft', more than i expected, i too assumed it would be 'third party only'.
It does have the policy holders name on it. I'm just wondering if we were stopped, would would a policeman be likely to delve that deep (not particularly deep i admit!!) , or would he be satisfied that 'the car' was covered?

To be honest, whilst we passed dozens of Policemen, we weren't even looked at - always waved on. I think the Police are only interested in locals smuggling stuff!

The big question you have to answer, is what would you do if you hit and maybe killed someone? Easier not to on a bike and when not riding at night, with quite a bit of off road, but if you intend driving through towns etc, you may just want to bite the bullet and do the 'sensible' thing.

Oh, and for heavens sake take the number of the British Embassy with you - just in case!

I've always viewed the insurance bought locally as nothing more than a piece of paper that you can get in trouble for not having. The idea of being able to claim on it seems unlikely.
If that is the case, we'd be in the same situation either way (if the worst happened when i wasn't driving)
But, i don't want to make light of what would be a very serious situation, i just wanted to get some opinions really. I guess i'm not the first to travel with other drivers in what is normally only my truck.

With the AXA office in Ouarzazate:
A 10 day valid 3rd party insurrance costs 620dh = 56 euro... for a motorbike.
15 minutes paperwork and you drive without any worry.

We were stopped maybe 4 or 5 times (maybe it’s the G Wagen with blacked out rear windows??):confused1: :clap:



Mostly just for a chat but they never bothered to ask for any documents. From memory insurance was 900dh. Although I tried to ask I never got to the bottom of whether the car was insured or just me as the named driver.
They seemed to say as long as I was with the vehicle it was insured even if someone else was driving. But my French is useless so who knows

BTW someone with us was pulled for overtaking in a restricted area. The fine went from 800 to 400dh when he asked for a receipt
