Info on the Tibesti Mountains

Can anyone give me any information on the current situation in the Tibesti Mountains. I'm planning to try and get in there later this year if the situation isn't too dodgy. Is everyone in there really wary of outsiders or are there a few people that can be contacted for help getting around?

Cheers.

Hi - what do you mean by "getting around"?
Bardai or Borku?
Contacts in N'Djamena or Faya?
Are you travelling with your own car?
Rent a car and a driver/guide?
Rent-a-camel?

I havent heard anyone getting into the true Tibesti for a year or two but windows open up.

"Is everyone in there really wary of outsiders"

That about sums them up - they're famous for it! Last I heard even Faya is hard to get into,

Hello Ferg,

I know someone in the UK who is making serious preparations for a visit next winter. He is pretty experienced (understatement), may wish to have companion. Can put you in touch, will need more info. Please contact me via the FJE website.

I made a self-organized extended tour to Northern Chad in March/April this year including Ennedi, Erg du Djourab and Faya. We have been invited by the Prefet who assured us that we were free to go everywhere in his B.E.T. country. However, he was not able to provide us with the obligatory guide knowing the NEW minefileds north of Faya along the route to Zouar. Moreover, the Chadian military people which we had to contact refused strictly to enter the 'battle zone' north of Faya.

Going to Sherda from Seguedine is rather risky as we learned from local people in Faya that there are highwaymen waiting for 4WDs between Mumr and Sherda.

Security in Faya as well as in Fada and Ennedi is still being poor due to permanent rebel attacks during night. We heard machine gun fire and even artillery in Fada.

Tibesti is absolutely out of reach presently and in the near future. In my opinion it makes no sense to make plans for visiting Tibesti mountains (Bardai) as long as the political problems have not been solved.

Thanks for the info. I'm a photojournailist and I was hoping to get into the mountains to try and make a photo story about the place and the people, but from what I've been hearing I think I'll put that idea on hold for a while until it settles down. Even if I got in in the current social climate I'd be unlikely to get peoples consent to take their picture.

Cheers anyway,

Ferg.
