how to enter into Algeria?

Hello,

is it possible to enter Algeria by the north : I mean is it possible to take the ferry from France or Spain and head to the north of Algeria? Or do I have to enter by Tunisia? Is it possible to get a visa for Algeria (in Belgium) when entering the country by the north?

Thanks,

Karel

As you may know, recently a French guy below
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/001768.html
entered by Oran and drove to Mali with little difficultly (or escorts). I have heard others coming and going via the Alg ports in recent years too.

You need to apply for a visa via an agency - like Libya. Some here:

Dont know about Belgium specifically but I am sure someone else will.

Getting the visum for Algeria in Brussels should be no problem. Friendly people over there, had no problem getting one two years ago but the cancelling of the charter flight to Timimoun cancelled my trip... you have to apply at the consulate, not at the embassy!

All info on this site:

cheers,

Hello Karel,

Beginning 2003 I got a visum from the Algerian consulate in Belgium without being asked for an invitation. Same experience as Rafke: very friendly people.
I made a motorcycle trip entering from the Tunesia. Went to Djanet and Tam. Had a very nice time.

Regards

Guy

to Djanet and Tam, eh? did you have to have an escort to cross from Djanet to Tam? I assume you used the road down to Djanet and back up from Tam, but do tell us more
cheers

Rich, I assume Guy was there just before the proverbial hit the fan and stuck - so he's done nothing more than you have a couple of times (those were the days...)

Karel,

No problem entering at Algiers (then drive out quickly!).

Visa is valid for any legal entry point - it's not specified on your passport.

OK but it's better to stay one night in he Algiers than to leave it before night !
I've met somebody 2 monthes ago who take the road just before night and he said that there were a lot of controls and policemen (or army
) were very nervous to see an european on this road at night . He thank there were afraid about his own security .

Algiers is supposed to be safe. Only the old city you should maybe avoid. The countryside in the north is at some places very dangerous. Especially around Laghouat, Tizi-Ouzou and Blida (and many other places). So i agree with Roro. Stay the night in Algiers, and then try to drive in one day to Ghardaia. At www.algeria-interface.com there used to be a map with recent attacks (of islamic militants and other bandits). Now the latest map is from june 2003. I think the situation has not really changed since then.

Thanks guy's,

just had contact with the embassy of Algeria here in Brussels and indeed ; there are no restrictions to enter Algeria by the north (Algiers, Oran).

Has anyone prices for ferry leaving from Marseille or Séte to Algeria?

Greetz,

Karel

To have infos about ferries to Algeria , try this site :

http://www.sncm.fr/action/moduleRequ...eau=ALG&sens=1

For 2 persons and a 4x4 it's about 1000 euros ( depends on accomodations , car , etc ... )

Infos can also be found at Euromer agency in Montpellier ( 04.67.65.67.30 ).

Nice trip .

RR.
