How to get to Tidjikja - take two?

Chris,

I was going to ask this question again this Sunday but it looks I won't be able to come to Salisbury for the LC meet.

Are there piste waypoints available for the route between Terjit and Tidjikja via the Oasis of Taoujafert (Oujeft).

Is there such a route? As you know Terjit to Oujeft is part of R5 backwards and - according to Cyril's book - halfway along that route a piste leads back up north to Mhaireth (actually not far east of Terjit - on 13°). And from Mh a piste leads NE again to around KM44 on R6. A very long way round.
I presume you are wanting a route direct from Oujeft E or SE to meet R10 somewhere but I've never heard of it and if it was do-able, Cyril would have tried it?
Now I look at the Faraoun 200k map I recall I had the same idea once. If you continue SE down the Oujeft canyon you get to Faraoun and the Oued Timinit which leads NE a few km to a point temptingly close to the Atar-Tidj route (as marked on the 200k). Now I look at it again I must have been planning it on a bike - it only takes a small obstruction to stop a car and there are cliffs all around. According to the 200k, east of Oujeft all looks very complicated: dunes or rock and canyons. There must be a reason the pistes go the way they do.

Thanks, Chis. I'm been told there is away through Valee Blanche and Oued Rachid. Does it make sense to you?

I thought Vallee Blanche was near Chamonix but Oued Rachid sounds like a long way south - KM 300 of R10. Really, my guess looking at a maps would be as good as yours. Out of Oujeft it looks congested - further south maybe less so.
I notice the Mich map has a piste from Faraoun to a place called Nterguent (Touf el Henna on the IGM 1m?) from where there may be ways SE to Rachid.
Should be fun finding out - there is lots of scope in that area for short-range exploration

Chris,

I am hoping to travel there in Jan 06 and will let you know if it's doable.

Thanks for the offer - I've already got myself a full set of IGN 200k for TTQV.

Hi Chris, if you have the Mali IGN CD I'd be interested in purchasing one

Hi Roman,

Just got back from Mauritania, where I did Atar-Terjit-Oujeft-Faraoun-Bou Naga-Nouakchott.

In a couple of days I'll send to Chris the route description and waypoints and I can send you a copy too.

From Oued Timinit you can get from Faraoun to the route from Atar to Tidjikja. It is a wide oued with huge dunes. Very sandy but doable. I think that this would be the best option to get to the Atar-Tidjikja route.

Cheers,
José

Thanks Jose. That will be most useful.
