Hello Glynn

They only have a rear 140 80 18. Having made the elemetary mistake of not bringing tyres with me, I do not want to compound this further down the line. Being my first trip and being very green behind the ears I would feel more at ease if I had a new set.Your help would be most welcome.

Relative to the size difference between 140-80-18 and the 150-70-18
here's what you need to know.

1. They will both carry the same maximum load and are load rated at 69.

2. The difference between the 80 and 70 is this...the 70 is a shorter tire, and you'll have less room to deflate the tire...not good...the reason you want to deflate the rear tire is to get better traction in sand, and to achieve a "longer" foot print when deflated...the longer foot print will along your tire to grab more of the traction in front of it when deflated. A taller tire deflated gives you this longer footprint and will allow you to carry a heavy load at a lower pressure...most desert vehicles prefer taller tires.

3. The 140 vs 150...this is a tire width issue and means more for street cornering...but you're on an enduro and some not on some sissy street bike like a K75s...so who cares!

ALSO keep in mind the number of plies on the thread and the sidewall...the more plies on the tread, the less puncture proof...the more plies on the sidewall, the more sturdy the sidewall at lower tire pressures. Be careful not to drop your sidewall pressure too low because your tire may come off the rim...

Scorpion is crap...a used Metzler or Micheling Desert may be better than a new Scorpion!

Tyre saga

Thanks for the advice Eddie just had the Michelin Baja 3 Ply on rear fitted I dont think it will get me to South Africa. So Im hoping for a reply from Glynn, as I dont know the situation on tyres further down.Otherwise its a trip back to Spain

There are tyres available in Togo...I believe...and if your timing is good, possibly Dakar.

If you coincidentally follow the bivouac stops of the Dakar rallye, you may be able to pick up tires from those guys...new or used...may be better than the current tread! I ran into them a couple times, as there is quite a bit of leftover tires, parts, etc....that local moto shops pick up...ask the local motorcyclists!

I've read in the HUBB on a prior post that in Togo, there is some mechanic that can get a hold of tires...and Guinea is a good option to receive tires as well...it in the HUBB archived posts...sorry I couldn't offer more detail...

I am sure you can find it. You just have not tried hard.

1st :

In Ceuta , for example they got it . They have as much tyres available as in London. OK .. not all of them on stock , but overnightly you get absolutely every size in the Michellin/Meztec/Dunlop catalog . All the shops get stocked overnightly from Malaga , where there are absolutely every concevaible part. And probbably way cheapier. If spoken spanish is an issue I can help locating those for you by Phone .

2nd/ in Marrakech there is a fantastic motorcycle shop . The cater for harleys , KTMS , and even more exotic bikes. AS ussual , michelin catalog /pirelly all available . NOT ON THE SPOT , -it takes 1 day to get the stock- but that's ok ..

3rd . OK .. lets say that you don't fancy riding back north . You can still have a go in Dackla (yep , a lot of people change the tyres in Dakcla -swapping to knobblies (actually very pointless as ITs all tarmac now ) .. and there is quite a big stock on used -but useable- tyres in dackla.

etc..etc..

Also .. have you tried wemoto ( I think is Wemoto Home ? The ship to Gambia !!! They ship to Dakar , even they ship to f***ing Congo !! . Wouldnt' they ship to Agadir ? I doubt it . PRice of shipping (4 days ) a 17 inches rear knobble to Brazza : 40 Quid

Hi Glynn

Have just read Javiers entry wanted to swap tyre at ktm ceuta 3 weeks ago and they advised I would find in casa.This was not the case , so if you are still willing to bring tyres I would prefer this course as it means 5 day trip.
