Help! I need to take the ferry from Tangier to Barcelona, but no green card insurance

I need to take the ferry from Tangier to Barcelona. I have a motorcycle with no green card insurance (it expired, and I had purchased it in America being an American). Will the Spaniards let me off the boat without insurance? Are there places to purchase green card insurance for a motorcycle for 2 weeks at the ferry terminal itself? I am afraid that I will get to Barcelona and be told I must stay on the boat or take the ferry back to Morocco because I don't have insurance. Can someone please advise me, I need to take the ferry in about a week from now.
Thank you.

In the 4 times that I have come back to Spain with a 4x4 from Morocco I have only ever had to show my passport - but this was from Ceuta to Algerciras.

I'd say there is a good chance that nobody will check.....?

the police in barcelona centre do have some days where they stand at traffic lights and pull bikes over for a check on papers. you'd probably want the peace of mind of having your documents in order, to save on a fine.

also, around the faster trunk roads in barcelona they have put up speed cameras. it was on the news for a while, lots of reports on deaths and excess speeding. so they're quite hot on it at the moment.

I can just corroborate, in broken English, all said above.

- Moroccan customs do check the green paper when you come from E.U! In case you plan to go back to Africa
And sometimes when you enter from RIM. ( a good xerox job in Ndb can do the trick)

- The friendly Guardia Civil very rarely check the green paper in customs, (specially if you look fine, according to their conservative standards), they are more interested in psychoactive botanical samples.
Despise that, being insurance-less in Spanish roads is far too risky. They often do check papers. Having U.S. plates you may show any paper with the good dates and the word insurance on it, but If you get hit, the other party insurance has no obligation to pay, and you get a 950 eu fine.

- I don't know what is best If you plan to stay in E.U. for short time, my insurance company knows nothing about short time insurance. Sooner or later you got to get it wright. Expect no kind of help from U.S. embassy even if things go wrong. May be best try to get and extension of your U.S. insurance.

If there is such a thing as advice: I'd spend the money in insurance and take the road north, in stead of the expensive ferry. Keep in mind that a decent European insurance company can help you also if you go back to Africa. They paid my many thousand eu medical bill in Dakar.

Send me a mail when you are around here.

good luck.

Call Stefan.

Hi,
I've used this guy a few times and he has always come through. He can buy German 3rd party insurance for foreign vehicles from the ADAC and send it to you. You can ask him to fax a copy to you and you pick up the original in Barcelona from the poste restante.

Green card Insurance for Europe

Thats thats the URL. check out his site.
Cheers,
Cam J.

You could also try these folk:-

eBike Insurance - Bike and Classic Bike Insurance from eBike Insurance

A UK insurance broker who provide bike insurance (don't know if you need a UK address) - it's all done online and, from memory, you can pay monthly - therefore, you can stop paying any month you like, thereby cancelling the insurance cover whenever you choose.
