Heading to Algeria, Bord Moktar or Agadez

Hello,
After 7 months of traveling Africa we are heading into Niger and then to Algeria (we are currently in Kano Nigeria).
Our original plan was to go to Agadez and try to meet some other overlanders to share a guide with. But the situation there seems a bit sketchy and I am not sure I would have luck meeting any overlanders. So I am thinking Gao to Bord Moktar might prove a better route.

Does anyone have any advice on this matter, I would appreciate all insight and suggestions, also if anyone has anyone suggestions about a route in Algeria I would appreciate it.

Also I was planning on getting a transit visa for Algeria in Naimey, I heard it is only good for 7 days, any expierence on what happens if you overstay the 7 days (prison or a hefty fine?????)

Thanks

Hi,

>Also I was planning on getting a transit visa for Algeria in Naimey

fresh experience on this matter: Algerian consulate in Niamey might not issue transit visa any more.
Some days ago tourists applied for a visa in Niamey to enter Algeria at Bordj Mokhtar. The visa was refused and they were refered to Gao. There finally the tourist obtained their visa (but possibly only because their passports with the original visa were stolen).

So actually, I don't even know if they normally issue transit visa in Gao.
I hope to find it out.

Learned from a case last year: at least some trouble and you will be judged (that might take some days).

Best regards, Yves

Not sure if this alert from the US DoS is significant or just a general reminder following recent events. It doesn't really say anything new and the north of Mali has been like this for years:
