Gaz to Timbuctu

Rensina and I (Allen) are planning to head to Timbuctu from Bulgaria in December via Algercirus and Ceuta.
We are Australians in a Gaz 66, Russian built 130" wheelbase, Radio Repair truck. (V8 petrol) We have 4 months + to go there and return to Spain.

I know this is a motorcycle site but it is the best site for accurate, up-to-date information for travellers on the web.

I've driven around Morrocco for a month before but after that we're dependent on maps and advice from other travellers. The maps and GPS we have, the advice we need.
The best and most scenic route, the least dangerous and the most culturally enjoyable way is how we would like to go. Which way is that?
We don't like places that are set up for tourists.

Our experience?
40 years of off-road expeditions/safaris in Australia, 5 years running tours in Mongolia with Russian vehicles.
Driven Korea to Rotterdam via Vladivostok, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, western Russia, Black sea, Europe.
Helsinki to the Gulf of Aquaba.
Rensina's published a book. "Russian Documents..Mongolian Dust."

We like wild places.
Don't necessarily need campgrounds as we are self contained in the truck.

Any advice will be gratefully received.
If you're going our way, at our time, look for the green Gaz!
Allen and Rensina.

Hi Resina & Allen,

nice route is NDB-Atar-Chinguetti-Tidjikja-Tichit-Oualata. From there you have to decide to go direct to TOM or pass via Segou or Douenza.
Some pictures of this route from Dec 2010 here:

Good journey

Thanks for that Ferdi!
I like your pictures!

Do other veterans of this area of Africa have anything to add?
Allen.
