Garmin Etrex GPS
 

I am a dimwit. I cant remember if a Garmin Etrex can be programmed with preset waypoints before a trip (and if so, how) which it will then take you to, or whether one has to rely on storing physically visited waypoints? I know the GPS 12 can be preprogrammed..... I cant remember! Anyone help?
(Is the Garmin 128 similar in this respect?)

There are a number of different Etrex's, I have the Legend. You can certainly load waypoints onto this, and I think probably on all of the Etrex's.

You can use Waypoint+ (freeware or shareware on the internet), but Garmin's own MapSource is in my opinion worth the rather high price (£90?). It's a doddle to upload and download waypoints, routes, tracks, detailed maps, etc., as well as being capable of route planning. Although it doesn't even have an outline of Africa!

Garmin's website www.garmin.com will explain the differences between the different models.

You can also of course manually pre-store waypoints, but I wouldn't recommend it for more than a few. Time consuming, prone to errors and entering one digit incorrectly could result in you being hundreds of miles from where you inrended!

Thanks - thats good of you. I havent got a data cable to link my Etrex to my PC so I am reduced to entering coords by hand right now - as you say, can be prone to error. Fortunately my route is linear and I can see that they match up - though having entered about ten today I will let my head stop swimming http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif then I will check them tomorrow.

I have a GPS 128 ordered - bigger screen size, and intend to link that to my PC.
