fuel stops across the sahara
 

Does anybody have a good Idea of the distances involved between places you can refuel at when crossing Sahara via Niger/Algeria?
Got a 30L tank plus a 10L Jerry on an XT600. Will this be enough?

If you get any reactions via the e-mail please forwared them to me want to do the same route on the same bike! When do you leave?

I don't know about the fuel consumption figure for a 'bike, but the distances marked on the Michelin 953 are pretty much bang-on.

You have 400Km, Tam-In Guezzam
then 220 Km from there, through Assamakka to Arlit.

On the Djanet-Tam piste, there is 'possible' fuel at Zaoutellaz and Hirafok (so you are looking again at about 400Km between those two points). Whilst a risk for a thirsty 4wd, I would suspect you could get enough petrol at any time from these two places. Large quantities of diesel can be a problem.

Can you get fuel in In Guezzam as 660 km on a xt600z is just on the risky side like I would figure to ride 800, just in case you get lost for a while, fuel consumtion on average that stretch will be 1 to 15 or so that means 55 liters of fuel. I would like to keep it under 40 liters so then you get 600 km out of it and it would make a nice drive to In Guezzam and refuel there.

BUT IS THERE PETROL IN THAT PLACE? Or availeble through locals some way, if it is more expencive thats not the point then!

In Guezzam is a small town! It has fuel, food ("restaurants"!), water everything a (desert traveller) could dream of!

No problem with fuel, particularly petrol.

I noticed that the distances between towns looked fine, I was just not sure about availability.
It all sounds fine. I'll just have to go and make sure!

FYI the petrol pump at Bordj el H (Zaou...z) is bust and may not be be repaired in a hurry. Diesel is OK.

I dont mean to cause panic here but on at least four occasions when I was in In Guezzam there was no fuel whatsoever because of delivery problems. The longest wait I heard of was 4 days. The situation may have improved because of the road construction that is going on there. I suppose you wont attempt the trip on your own, so try to get friendly with a European car/4WD who can take an extra jerry can for you. You can sell it in Arlit.

Actually, I've heard the same about IGZ recently although I havent been there for years.

I would say carry 650kms worth or bring a book for the wait

So, after all that the current known situation is maybe petrol at Zaoutellaz (if the pump is fixed) and Hirafok , and definitely fuel at IGZ but there may be a wait?

Not quite. there will be no petrol at Zao but fuel at Ideles (not Hirhafok). And any place can get out of stock which means delays of a day or two.
