Fuel shortage in Egypt - April 2012

As reported here:
"Important! There s a huge sortage of fuel (benzine aand petrol) in all Egipt for one month with cues for 9 hours waiting, with the army protecting the gas stations. As tourists and with luck they let us pass, but is a big mess. So bring some fuel from Sudan, even if it s a bit more expensive."

and to me by these guys:
Egypt diesel situation | KIWIS IN AFRICA

there is a fuel shortage affecting both diesel and petrol in Egypt at the moment, at least the above report this in the desert areas and Aswan.

Please comment from your own experiences below so other travellers can figure out what is going on please ;-)

Cairo fine for petrol.....today

Dear All,

After a mad few days last week, Cairo has been fine for petrol since around about a week ago. I'll have a look for deisel on the way home, but there seem to be no queus anymore, so either it's fine or they've run out completely. I think I'd have heard if it was the latter.

Fuel shortages or possibly just panic buying seem to come and go based on rumour after rumour. So far it's never lasted more than a day or two.

Yep. I'm in Cairo also and not problem with petrol. Diesel is certainly difficult though and apparently has about 10% water in it. Having said that I have not seen any queues here.

So the case is
1 liter Diesel price at the pump is: 1.10 Egyptian pounds, about 0.18 $
The government imports diesel when short in production (during harvest season, etc.) with the price of 1.10 $ for a liter which is: 6.64 Egyptian pound and pay for the difference from country budget
In the streets people doesn’t believe this, and a lot of rumors spread around claiming conspiracy from the government.
For my personal opinion I think the difference of price should only cover transportation for workers, goods and harvest,
All private companies: oil, communication, construction, etc., and all those who make profit should buy diesel with global prices!
That’s it
So queues will remain for some time , they import and distribute what they have , part of it is stolen and sold in black market , also short in foreign currency the problem will stay for some time !

Fuel sortage

Hi,

I wrote the first post - we got 80 litres of Benzine in Asswan because the military let us pass in a gas station they controlled, and after that all the gas stations where closed from Aswan to Hurgada, we ve seen it, it s not conspiracy :) Going north things were ok, maybe now all over the countries.

But if coming from Sudan, it s better not do do like us - tank almost empty because it was cheaper in Egypt!

CHeers from Cairo, almost getting Libyan visa!

Confirmed, there is fuel shortage in almost whole Egypt (Sinaï, Western Desert, Luxor). Especially for benzin people are queuing for days, sometimes even shops are closed because people stay in line with their cars. Today we ended up in some kind of local's fight, because the petrol was not going to be filled up.

The good thing is that the police/military checkpoints are willing to help you and the same goes for the other Egyptian people. Tourists seem to have a small advantage in this respect. In any case, fill up as many times as you can. But be aware of the pollution of the petrol (we had to replace two extremely polluted fuel filters and found out that the diesel is mixed with water).

There is petrol n Cairo, but in Aswan Luxor and other towns still major fuel issues. And it is business as usual, ripp the tourist in Egypt. Price of petrol per litre went from ,90 piastras to 4Egytian pounds per litre.

They will sell you 80 fuel for the same money, here and there 90 or 92 is available but more expensive.
