Fuel containers in Mauritania..

Forgive me if this has been asked before but I've not found anything on the subject..

Basically - I am going to Mauritania this winter and would like to try some of the longer pistes once I have a bit of experience and confidence. Some of these will require a lot of fuel. Is it possible to buy fuel containers locally rather than drive a car full of empty jerry cans all the way through Europe. I assume it would be possible but we all know what assumptions are, don't we? Anyone been there got any advice?

Lambchop - you can buy cheap used vegetable oil containers- ( Speaking French helps!)
As long as you don't need them to last a long time, then they are fine -wash them out with a bit of fuel and that's sorted- colour- anyone you like as long as it is green or yellow! but mostly green. If one thing excels in Africa, it's the huge variety of Bidons! Personally, I'd seek them out in the main market, 10 mins walk from the Hotel Halima in NCK
When you no longer need them, give them away- loads of kids etc will take them off your hands and be glad to have them.

IMHO skip jerricans entirely. Along with vegetable oil containers, ordinary 2 liter or 1.5 liter water bottles work fine for fuel.

Put two in a sturdy plastic bag, bungee cord between the two bottles, fasten to bike, you're good to go. Or three or four bottles as needed. Enjoy.

For that matter, if the vehicle is a diesel, one doesn't even need to rinse residual vegetable oil out of the containers.

Ridefar I agree, if I'm on the bike plastic bottles are as good as anything but I've decided to take the 4 wheels this time.. Think I'm gonna have bike envy in a big way but you can't have it all..

Thanks for the input folks.
