From Thiodaine to Hirafok

Hi everybody,

Do you know a nice route to cross the Amadror between Erg Thiodaine and Hirafok ?
Elsewhere may be a not so bad itinerary (it means not boring) ?
How much time to do this?

Thanks

Robert

We took part of the A7 route in Sahara Overland (actually written up as Djanet to Ideles) which crosses the Amadror. The route takes you through the middle of the plain and then out into the Tefedest. Once in the Tefedest we went north to Garet Djenoun and then backtracked south down the Tefedest. It was a really scenic trip, esp the Amadror and Tefedest.

Thanks Richard for your quick reply.

I don't understand very well if you mean travelling on the East or West side of the Tefedest.
Do you think crossing Amadror from Thiodaine to classic Djanet-Tam piste (A2) is possible and easy (easier than going to Mertoutek and after to Hirafok)?
I think our guide knows this region very well but I prefer have some advices before

There is an exit point through some hills on the west side of the Amadror that we took (part of A7 in SO) and then went up the East Tefedest valley for 1/2 a day to Garet el Djenoun. East Tefedest is very beautiful. We then went south down the East Tefedest again, but this time on the more western side of the East Tefedest (i.e. the right hand side of East Tefedest when going south).

Out in the middle of the Amadror we crossed a big piste which goes from Ilizi to Tam but which is not on any map that I have seen. This piste must connect with the main Djanet to Tam piste.

I have done 4 different pistes from Djanet to Tam. The one I described across the Amadror and into Tefedest East was, for me, the nicest. This was because it was remote (so is the far south piste near the Niger border) but also a lovely mix of flat plains and mountains.

If you mean directly south from Erg Thio cross country over the plain to pick up main D-T piste west of Telertheba then it looked wide open and easy when I crossed A7. you can go via the salt mines (forget name), or more east past a lone cone mountain landmark just north of A2/telertheba.

down to mertoutek along A7 (going up NNW from the green sign to mert and back as its a dead end AFAICT.) is more scenic I agree, and not so hard.

Hi Chris and Richard,

"cross country over the plain to pick up main D-T piste west of Telertheba then it looked wide open and easy when I crossed A7. you can go via the salt mines (forget name), or more east past a lone cone mountain landmark just north of A2/telertheba"

Yes, that's what I mean : I've seen Telertheba and salt mines (Name is Tissemt) on IGN Map (1/1.000.000) and I think it's the more direct route between Thio and Hirafok (but I didn't know how is it).
If we have enough time, we'll try more west (as you tell it's more scenic) .

"Out in the middle of the Amadror we crossed a big piste which goes from Ilizi to Tam but which is not on any map that I have seen" : good info too, may be our guide will make us follow it...

Thanks a lot
