from Portugal to Dackar in series
 

I planing to go to Dackar from portugal. We are planing in leaving in the midle of Agost. We will be traveling only in land rovers series (!)

I would like to know what tracks do you recomend and I would like to colect all the information I can about the military problems near mauritania border (frente polizary)

any one with a serie is weelcome!!

splendid idea, travelling with a lightweight. Be aware about safety of your belongings in your softtop!!
We are doing the same (crazy) thing with a group of 7 series in july-august.

Last year we already experience that problem of about safety. we were not robed but we could't leave the jipes more then 10 min!! last year we only went to morocco's . In august we as planning a bigger expedition!! :-))

We thought only doing the trip to Dakar and them ship the jipe back home. Does any one have experience in shipping jipes from Africa to Europe? prices, time, saifty problems,...


you will be leaving in jully? were are you going? also to Dakar?

we start in Belgium in july and we have to reach the small village of Bansang (near Georgetown in The Gambia) : we are taking goods for the hospital and school overthere.
No, we don't go to Dakar. We go inland Senegal.

Yep,

we shoul reach The Gambia in about 4 weeks. We will ship the Landies back to Antwerp and come back ourself by plane (due to lack of time).

We will ship a container with goods for Bansang. It is virtually impossible to take many things in your own 4WD : you need all of the payload a can get.

Were can we find information about the ships and containers. Do you have any idea how much does it cost to ship a land rover
(or a container with land rovers) from dakar(or any other place in Senegal) to portugal? How much will you pay to send them to belgium?

indeed a small world. We will ship the landies back home with a belgium-based company (Banjul-Antwerp).
I don't have any information about shipping to Portugal : but look around on the net (even the yellow pages), you will find enough companies.

Hope to see you and Renato once in Africa or in Portugal : we think of coming to Portugal with a few landies to do some ofroad.

Don't know if they are good but have a look at there website.

Yep Bernardo,

mine was a ex-dutch army 109 softtop. Now it has a hardtop, 2.5 dieselengine and power steering fitted.

I also drive a discovery 300tdi.

I bought my dieselengine from a friend in England. It's out of a "freightrover". The engine is identical as the one out of a 90 or 110 but fits better in a series (because of the shape of the distributioncasing).

The freightrover was a light van used by the Post in England. You can find the same engine in a DAF400 light van.

I don't know about DAF's being used in Portugal, but in Belgium you can still find them.

Ring all the DAF-dealers and ask around (the engine is also know as Rover or DAF BN-engine : because of the letters "BN" being part of the chassisnr.) These vans were made end '80's begin '90's.

Expect to pay something between 250-500€ for a good engine.

The 2.5 diesel is ofcourse not as powerful as the tdi but is great in a series and far more reliable then the 2.3 diesel. Easy to work on if somethings happens in the Sahara.

what is the diference in the distribution casing?


what do you think about the 2.5D engine? is it powerful enough? the diference "in the paper" is only 10 bhp

The engine out of a 90 or 110 has a sealed distribution casing and the injectionpomp sits lower on the casing : that's why it rubs against the chassis when used in a series. The DAF engine doesn't have a sealed distributioncasing but this can be easily sealed whith a homemade gasket. The injectionpomp sits higher and doesn't touch the chassis of a series.

Indeed the engine is not dramaticaly more powerful then the 2,3 but has 5 main bearings, better injectionpomp : runs smoother, doesn't smoke and is more relaible.

I drove a series 2,3 diesel aswell : the 2,5 is definitely a better engine. If you want to go for power and torque choose the tdi-engines : but then wouldn't it be better to buy a defender in the first place?
