Finding fellow overlanders to Timbuctou
 

I did ask before for fellow travelers and with some good replies. But due to various reasons the trip has been postponed till JAN 2007, I am going to take A fully Equiped Range Rover overlander from the Uk across to France and Spain, over to Morocco, across Atlas mountains, and down to western Sahara, into Mauritania and onto Mali to Timbuctou and Back! This is now to be in Late Dec 2006 or Early Jan 2007, I am Supporting "Breast Cancer Care"
I am looking for fellow companions, who must comply as follows, must be willing to do same trip, must be mixed crews, ie: husband and wife. have own vehicle properly prepared (Suggest read Chris Scotts "Sahara Overland" book.be of friendly nature, with good sence of humour, If your planning a trip and interested in making up the team please reply

My wife and I will be doing some of that route starting in Holland in sept 2006.
We wil be travelling in a converted and prepared 110 HCPU
We'll probably be ahead of you entering Africa in october. We have no time schedule so it is possible that we might meet.
We are going thriugh west Africa down the west side to the south and then up the east coast to Kenya and from ther across to Asia and who knows!!

But I am looking for crews who will do the whole trip together there and back, this is mainly for safety reasons, and more the merrier, ideally four or five vehicles would be good, two minimum, I have had replies before but most were only doing part of my route or going one way down south, But thanks again, and I wish you luck, (Sept is a bit warm and a friend hit mud in desert, dont forget axle snorkels in rainy season (River beds)

Two questions:
- first, we're preparring our RRC 300 Tdi for desert travel. Any suggestions, what did you do t prepare your RR?
- secondly, how long will the trip take?

Hi Grtz,
where do I start, well its automatic, so small fan assisted rad being fitted in front (from Gazell Helicopter) with temp gauge on gearbox, 110 springs fitted to rear and red and whites on front, gas shocks all round, winch and bumper on front, Full length roof rack fitted with tent fitted at front, spare wheel and two hi lift jacks, also land anchor, rear of rack has 8 jerry cans four water four fuel, full width solar panel to charge Auxilary Battery, covers jerry cans, these are supported through roof down to floor, NOT chasis! ladder fitted, snorkel fitted up to rack with triple air filters.
breather fitted to axles, watch out for mud in rainy season, friend had problem no snorkel on air intake or axles, other jerry cans in side so hopefully dont need all up top ( Nobody please tell me about weight up top!) what else? apart from Kinetic ropes and straps and all other bits like belts bearings and hoses Etc Etc, Sat phone with GPS plus two other GPSs, may fit bonnet fan to assist with cooling? and its a 3.5 v8 injection. plus anyhing else i think of in next twelves months, can send pic to email address, hope that helps, recommend Chris Scotts book, "Sahara overland" feel free to ask anything,

sorry forgot you asked how long? I estimate 5/6 weeks, approx 9,000 miles, friend did it from UK to Timbuc in 5 weeks, took ferry to spain, says could have taken less but visited places,he did 7,800 miles,

I am heading in off from London the same time as you and in the same direction....but on a bike. Going down the West Coast, up the East and onto Asia...but plans do change. Ours (still in the making) will be the best parts of a 1975 classic and a 1995 RRC soft dash with a 300Tdi. Idea is to put extra long distance fuel tanks along either side of the chassis, bloke doing the conversion (I cannot spare the time nor space) does home made tanks. Other than that rooftent maybe a full length rack so that spare can go up top. fridge (Engel) Detroit LSD front and back (not sure about these or a winch yet), snorkel, towing eyes front and back full body armour on the bottom, webasto (mainly for engine protection over in the winter in NL) 2" lift gas shocks all around, stage 2 intercooler and Wolf rims on BFG MT's to roll around on.
