Finally the right forum

Hi ladies and gents,

Yup I'm just another one of those people that plans to ride from Europe to somewhere south of the equator (2012). And after searching many forums I got the tip from a fellow traveller to check out this forum.

Well finally I found the forum I need, there's so many usefull tips here, especially about the important stuff you can''t find at other places, about borders, visa's and roads:)

Thanks in advance for all the usefull tips:) for all the silly questions I'll ask between now and spring 2012.

And the answer is simple, if you guys/girls can do the road on a motorbike I can do it on my bicycle:)

Welcome Shane !! Good to hear from you..

I really like the idea of a cycle trip in the next few years.. It will be a good way to shed some lazy traveller weight :thumbup1:

Hi Shane

I've seen a number of people cycling through north and west africa over the years and been in awe of their determination.

It was hard enough to face heading out into the desert on a powered two wheeler but to come across someone alone on a bicycle doing the same thing with only pedal power to keep them going over hundreds of miles, well, it puts my efforts into perspective. I've got a lot of respect for the cyclists. :thumbup1:

Hi guys thanks for the warm welcome,

Yes cyclists are a strange bread, with even more screws loose than bikers. Having cycled through large parts of the deserts of America, I know that the biggest problem apart from water is boredom and loneliness, both of which can be softened with a 1/2 litre bottle of malt whisky (lighter than beer and can be drank warm).

Though my biggest worry for Africa is bureaucracy and visas. But first I need to work my nuts off and save enough money to take a year off work hopefully then things will be alot quieter in the Sahara by then.....

I have motorcycled through Africa and cycled other places, bureaucracy is much easier with a bicycle, well there have to be some consolations, although apart from the carnet for a motorcycle East Africa is fairly straightforward either way.
Good luck with your trip.
