Entry taxes into Egypt
Hello Good Folks, Does anyone know the likely fees charged on a 4x4 entering Alexandria on the Visemar Ferry? I note that biker, Andre Els has tweeted 720EP (Customs fee is 505 EP insurance and plates another 220 EP) for a bike for a 9 day stay. That's about UK£80. Must be more for a 4x4 for 14 days? I see Chris Scots site has it at 607EP. I bet it's more. Any help and guidance gratefully received. Thanks, Toby

I think I paid all together more than that around 1000 EP (that included insurance for 1 month). Had a MB 307 van. Entered in Taba. Dec 2009.

Is the "Egypt Customs Fee" returned/ recovered at Egypt border exit (e.g. Taba) into Israel? Most mention Egypt Customs Fee at about LE 500 for 4x4. Is it likely to be about the same for bike as 4x4, or less for bike? Official motorclub CdP websites often mention 800% vehicle value for Egypt-enabled CdP, but some reference a possible Egyptian border-issued alternative to CdP. Is the "Egypt Customs Fee" the alternative to CdP? If so, the "Egypt Customs Fee" alternative might (clearly) be better choice than CdP, at least from upfront cost perspective. many thanks |

The local equivalent of a CdP means depositing the value of your vehicle (or maybe more) in cash with Customs and then expecting to get it all back when you leave the country. Not surprisingly most people choose the expensive CdP route, galling though it is if you're a Brit with a new GSA1200. Egypt is one of the most protracted border crossings in the world for overlanders, but only because there is so much that is required from so many entities. People do try and list it all here, but it takes a lot of concentration not to loose track of every single transaction. It takes a few hours and costs whatever it does, but at least once you're out it's all over - until you leave the country that is. Those pages on Sahara Overland www require tidying up once in a while, clearly I am behind schedule! Ch |

Back in 1999
I went through overland, in my Landy, from Libya to Egypt and had a Carnet, but there was also a fee to pay on top. It depended how long I wanted to drive in the country. It was quite cheap for three days (from memory), but a lot more for the 10 days I wanted. There were just two options on this (again from memory) 3 days, or 20 ish. Plus plates and insurance, which were reasonable. Once in, of course, it's quite a cheap country, so even with all that mularky its cheaper than driving in UK!
