Entering Algeria from the south

Hi

Has anyone managed to go from Niger into Algeria, then up to Tunisia and Europe?

As far as I'm aware, one can onl apply for an Algerian Visa in one's home country. Is this true? Could I get a tourist invitation (mandatory anyway, as I understand) that lets me pick up the visa in Niamey / Agadez (are there embassies here?).

I seem to remember that Algeria has consulates and embassies in most African countries.

From my experience one can get a transit visa in Agadez and in Niamey, but not in Bamako. No experience with Gao.

Sounds promising... for how long is a transit visa valid? May it be extended? Are there any restrictions?

Yes, I did this trip recently with a motorbike, got one month visa from Agadez. Would immagine one month to be sufficient, since you need a guide in Algerie and all this. Happy trip

Did you need an invite? Had you already arranged a guide for the places you wanted to visit in Alg?

you need to deal with an official Algerian guide company, or their represents in Europe. You just give them the information they need, and you should be able to pick up your visa in the Algerian consulat in Agadez. The prices vary, depending upon your nationality. On the stretch from Agadez to Arlit (end of the road), and further on to Assamaka and the Algerian border you are on your own. The guide meets you in Guezzam.

Prepare for tough driving, either on a bike or in a car.
