Egypt - Tunisia via Libya??

My apollogies if I am regurgitating an old topic...

Is it possible to travel alone from Egypt to Tunisia via Libya without using an expensive guide?

Alternatively, is there a ferry from Alex. to Tunis?

Thanks!
Jim

There's no ferry from Alex to Tunis. In fact I dont think there are any ferries from Alex to anywhere - though there used to be. Alex is now only of use as a freight port and the customs are notoriously obstructive.

Dunno about Egypt-Libya-Tunis, I have friends who've crossed over at Sollum and say its viable with a bit of hassle (ok, thats being euphemistic). I doubt you'd need a guide though.

EGYPT-LIBYA-TUNISIA by car is possible. You have to use the border-posts of SOLLUM when coming from EGYPT and RAS JEDIR when leaving LIBYA.

VISA & GUIDE for LIBYA are still necessary (at least, I do not have other Information).

The border to TUNISIA is easy on both sides.

To get a visa for Libya you must first organise an invitation from a Libyan tour operator. They will then discuss an itinerary with you, submit it for offical approval whereupon they can then send a fax invitation to their embassy abroad wherever you happen to be. As the law stands currently, they are responsible for you throughout your stay until you leave so they are unlikely to let you travel alone.

If your travelling without a vehicle the Lonely Planet guide on Libya would be. helpful.

One year ago I crossed Lybia solo coming from Egypt where I also applied for the visa. So no guide. The application took 3 weeks to be processed in Tripolis.
You will also need a 'authorized' translation of your passport put in your passport itself. The translation together with the authorization can be gotten from the local embassy, except when you're dutch, then you'll need to forge.
A translation is anyhows a good idea since many of the police etc. wont be able to read roman script.
I got a transit visa, giving me 7 days to cross and that leaves not many days for sightdeeing.
I don't know about tourist visa criteria.
Have a good trip
