Egypt to Sudan and conflicting info

Hi,

I'm planning on riding through Egypt south to Sudan. I have Carnet (From Canadian CAA) and asked for Sudan to be included, but was told that Sudan doesn't use a Carnet, but requires advanced permission and a bank guarantee. Sudan is listed on my Carnet, but crossed out, but the CAA (Suzanne Davis) specifically said that one isn't used. Needless to say, I'm a little confused- especially since HU has it listed as a 'must have' country...

Any Ideas?

Thanks.

Coming from Ethiopia (Geddaref if my memory is correct) into Sudan, I was specificaly asked to goto customs to show the carnet. I was driving a mercedes 1617.

Entering Sudan from Egypt on the Wadi Halfa ferry, its all a bit of a shit fight but again, saw people being asked to show their carnet.

Whether its compulsory to have one or not I dont know, sorry.

I have a carnet issued by ADAC (German AA).
Their map/list of countries says the carnet is accepted in both Sudan and Egypt.

And on the carnet itself, Sudan is listed and the comment says "This carnet may be used in the following countries, under the sole and exclusive guarantee of the issuing association"

In my case I did give ADAC a deposit, but it wasn't so huge: Euro 3 000.

Perhaps you can ask the CAA to re-issue your carnet to include Sudan, and pay the bank guarantee? But I know the amount of this varies not only depending on your vehicle price, but also which AA club issues it. ADAC requires a much lower deposit than say the French AA.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
