Tibesti Mountains

I am able to identify interesting places from simply studying my atlas and one of the places that has become of great interest to my are the Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad. My further research has shown this is a very difficult if not impossible place to visit (which in a way makes me want to go there all the more), at least from the most recent information I have found.

Whilst recognising there is little possibility of going to this fascinating place and in the absence of a trip there I was wondering if anyone here had actually been there or knows of anyone who has in the last year.

I imagine the border from Libya is closed but that looks the best route in.

Really any snippets of information about the Tibesti would be interesting even if I could never go there.

A good friend of mine, Gerhard Otte of Graz (Austria), climbed Pic Tousside in Tibesti Mountains in 1994 in a solo walk! He was my companion in one of the first travels to the Tibesti after the end of the Tubu revolt in the 70ies and 80ies.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
