drive through sand - extreem
 

Hi,
I know that there are roads we can take who are sealed to go through the Sahara desert. But where are the best places to go extreem through sand and searched for the unsealed roads to feel the real desert? Is that possible with a 2wd? In august?

Study Chris Scott's book and you will find what you are looking for. Even in hi-summer.
2wd? Start in Morocco and scare yourself happy around Merzouga and Chebbi dunes.
Tunisia has great 2wd dunes, and so has Mauritania.
Have fun - you will find kindred souls on all routes.

Yes you can go in August and play in the dunes BUT PLEASE REMEMBER TO ALWAYS KEEP A LARGE SUPPLY OF WATER WITH YOU.

Doentza to Timbuctu. The road's so badly corrugated, it's best to go off. Follow any track you like and see where you come out. Some good sand en route (though not that much fun when the sun's going down and you're trying to find a motorbike who stayed on the road). Make sure you have compass and 1:1000 000 maps to hand so you can work out where you are or you'll get badly lost. Bit of an adventure though.

I don't know when you were there Bel but in 2004 it was quite good and since then it's been further t**ted up to the extent that Toyota buses have now done the trip. Mind you, right now in the wet season it'd be awful. it is really wet in Tombouctou at the moment.....

hi , you can feel driving in the sand in the south of Morocco , mainly from around Merzouga , then deep south on the rocky pist from Merzouga to Mhammid.All these places are known by thier dunes of sands that present a real desert , mainly as they are the pists of Rally Paris -DAKAR.
