Dongola, Sudan: Korean Guesthouse - Really good accomodation

For those travelling through Sudan and looking for a place to stay in Dongola, I can highly recommend the 'Candaca Nubian Guest House' in Dongola. It is run by a lovely Korean family so is also known as the Korean guesthouse.

Clean, very very friendly & helpful, great facilities (washing machine, kitchen, fridge/freezer, compost bucket, recycling, internet, very secure parking etc etc).

Rooms are $10 pp including breakfast (Fresh coffee, tea, jam, honey, hard boiled eggs, bread, laughing cow cheese etc). Camping is possible for $7pp including breakfast.

Trucks won't fit through the driveway arch, but you could probably camp outside safely, the owners leave their nice car outside 24/7 and they have dogs at night outside). 4x4 with roof tents are no problem to come inside.

I mention it here because it is not included in either tracks4africa or my ohm gps map or in any guidebook etc etc. Using t4a trying finding the Lord Hotel or Ola hotel, then just keep following the same road and watch out for the 3 painted power poles of the guesthouse.

Hi Damian,

Good to see your travels ongoing!

Got any contact details for the Candaca Nubian - looking to stay there in a couple of days time.

Cheers, Sam.

I do have a business card of theirs, but its in the landy in a different country right now.

I know they use Facebook a lot, so if you also use it try contacting them that way:

Saw this on lonely planet - might have been closed only for a week or two, Sudanese government is quite fickle:

Korean guesthouse in Dongola closed down + other updates - Lonely Planet travel forum

So hard to say if its open again - I'd imagine so…. let us know….

Hm, fingers crossed. I don't have facebook, but have tried to send message anyway.

Anywhere else in Dongola if they're still closed?

Cheers, Sam.

If the Koreans are still there, go and have a chat with them and they will let you know the best options if they are closed...

Else just sit on the street for 10 minutes and the offers from the locals will start flooding in ;-p

There are a few other options, super cheap and more expensive with air con I think….?

Else very easy and safe to camp in the desert, best to camp away from the river due to mosquitos.

Koreans are long gone, but I can recommend a really good place with seven little rondavels (round huts).

No idea of the name, but it's on the east side of the Nile (near the road bridge) at N019° 10,34, E030° 29.39. They even have a boat for Nile sunset cruises...

Very friendly, good food and very fair rates.

Safe travels, Sam.

PS if you do stay, please tell them that Sam from the film crew says Hi!
