Hi,

>Does Algeria require a carnet for motorbikes, or will they put it in your passport?

No carnet required. You will get get a free "Titre de passage en douane" (or similar) and the vehicle (car or bike) will be registered in the passport.
You will have to buy car insurance for about 30 EUR.

Yyves,
When did you pass through and what vehicle(moto or car)?
In Feb 2007, I passed through there on my moto and nothing was stamped in my passport.
I was issued a temporary import permit for the moto and I had to hand that in when I exited via Tunisia. No insurance either. I entered in Northern Niger and exited via Tunisia.

Josh is passing through on his quad at the moment and will have recent info...quadsacrossafrica.com or something similar to that.

Hi motoede,

don't worry, at the border they know what to do and also the guide which will pick them up. The procedure ist pretty streight forward. I passed it the last time 9 months ago and a dozen times or so before.
You don't need a carnet. The Algerian customs noted the TPD N° in my passport, I checked.

>I was issued a temporary import permit for the moto
That is the TPD

>I was issued a temporary import permit for the moto
It was possibly overlooked, but it is compulsory and driving w/o insurence may cause serious trouble in case of an accident.

Yves, you're right on the TPD...I checked my passport and the Algerian customs guys stamped the TPD number on there at entry and exit, BUT I couldn't find any insurance documentation in my souvenirs.

I agree, the Algerians on the Niger border in In Guezzam were very friendly and helpful...no issues...definitely different than the Mauritanians;)

One of my favorite countries of my trip...would love to return there!

Another thing to remember about the Carnet...although it is not required, it does help in translating your vehicle information for them, as it looks official and has a French translation of the information.
