does aanyone know a landrover mechanic in Giza/Cairo

We are stuck in Giza with a faulty Turbo. The new part is on its way from the Uk but we need help to fit it as the bolts on the exhust are corroded. It is a 1990 defender and 9 of the bolts are 1/2" not metric.
We dare not drive too far. Can anyone in Cairo help either with a Land rover agent or mechenic or where we can get 1/2" nuts. We are a bit desperate.

I have made temporary repairs on failed turbos in the past by blocking the oil lube pipe with a small bolt or whatever, so that I could be able to continue driving. With less power, but not loosing massive amounts of oil through the exhaust. A worn out turbo is garbage anyway.
This was on older vehicles without electronics, and I don't know if this could pose a problem on a more modern car.
But on a 1990 Defender? Worth trying. :thumbup1:

Landy mechanics etc in Cairo

Not a problem. Dont worry. There's a whole gang of us with Defenders in Cairo (Brits, Canadians, US, Europeans etc) and we have access to excellent mechanics. Drop me a private message - ideally before the weekend because we are heading into the desert for a week. Call in for a pint if you want. We are in Ma'adi about 30 minutes from you

Cheers

A year or so ago I have used this guy:
Hosam, +201 221 16756
It is located at:
N29 59.646
E31 16.782
Do not expect a european workshop, it is a small outfit, sometimes they do not even electricity but the young guy that runs the shop is very capable and I think also the only independent Land Rover mechanic in Cairo.
Hope it helps, good luck.

a note on importing parts to egypt and a big thank you

A big thank you to everyone for their help and offers for mechanics.

We thought it was the Tubo and waited for the replacement from the Uk which was 5 days with Interlink Express but the fault was still there. We eventually realised it was the diaphragm on the turbo pressure feed pipe on the fuel pump. It took 3days DHl from the Uk for the part to arrive. The Land rover is now back in action and so far running sweetly. It only took 30mins to change the diaphragm (one a half hours to dissmantel prior to the parts arrival) plus £170 delivery and £60 for import tax. The part was only £22. Still a lot cheaper than driving back home and better weather. We are now back in Port Said renewing our carnet de passage and then we will begin again.

Just a note when importing to Egypt we had to pay just under 3 times the cost of the part with DHL but it was quicker (3 days) than Interlink
DHL cost of shipping higher £150 gbp for under 1k part cost £22gbp and import duty £60 Gbp.
With Interlink Express (Aramex in egypt) the shipping for 7k from the Uk was £120 gbp and the value of the turbo was £220 the import duty was £60 gbp and it took 5 days.
Check the import duty with the shipper if you have an expensive part to replace.

Glad you are sorted and on the road. Pint waiting in Ma'adi and a Landy full of Brits sitting here wanting to chat about routes south :)

Just arrived in Port Said yesterday with a defender with no reverse or fifth gear! Tried everything outside the box.

We're going to try the recommendation above unless somebody can point us in another good direction? Really hoping to make Aswan this weekend if possible as we were waiting over a week in iskunderun and have friends to meet further south!
Thanks

Thanks James. We've left Cairo. Gonna chance Khartoum or addis with it.

For anyone else in the same boat:

Tried the independent given above with coords (spot on thanks). He has his number (in arabic) written on the wall. I couldnt get through at the time. There is 3 old defenders knocking around outside his place.

Main dealer mti by airport. The service centre is not that on the website it is the Ducati dealer up the road.

Ethio lakes in Addis has been recommended by a fellow hubb poster

Thanks for the help everyone. It's surprising how far you can get without reverse!

Habari 24 Jun 2013 14:33

Sorry you could not meet with Hasam, he is usually at the shop in the afternoon with a hem... variable schedule... ; )
In Addis I would recommend Mitchell Cotts, N9 00 926 E 38 44 677 ( I have already posted this in an earlier thread)

Cheers

LR workshop Aswan

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all!
Been driving in a 1968 series 2a from Cape Town and home to Norway.
Just crossed in to Egypt from Sudan via Abu Simbel.
I managed to limp into Aswan, something wrong with my gearbox - it whines in 2nd and 3rd gear , no power in 5th and no torque in 1st before RPM works up.
4th is fine :)

Think she need some work ,maybe a overhaul job.

Any suggestion on good workshop in the Aswan area - if not somewhere North ( Luxor / Cairo)

Any question about Cape Town-Egypt (September - November 2018) feel free to ask, went by Burundi, Rwanda and crossing Sudan Egypt by land.

Thanks
Frank
