Djanet to Ghat

Does anyone know if the border from Algeria is open from Djanet to Ghat?

From Djanet to Ghat : closed since .... a long time !
From Ghat to Djanet closed since 2003 .

I was talking with a local guide here in Algiers and he heard rumors that they were opening up the Djanet-Ghat border both ways. His friend was taking a trip into Libya and should have a definitive answer soon. Is there any truth to this rumor or is it completely unrealistic to expect that border to open?

hi - this would be just great if they'd open this border between Djanet and Ghat for tourists too!
But I must say, its hard to believe...

Still closed both way for touristic transit.
Rumors diffused by interestesd travellers (italians) are with no any credit.
All the border both side is under high control to stop illegal emigration directed to north. Read local algerian newspapers .

Still cheers with shany

Hello,
I can confirm Budrinas statement. Actually it is not possible to exit Libya at Tin Alkoum. unfortunately it happens that guides promis exit to be possible - but at the end you are stuck there, like some travellers this week.

News on DJanet-Ghat cross ?

Old Thread , always good the question .
Any fresh news about Algeria/DJanet - Libya/Ghat crossing ?
Ciao

Chris Scott 27 Oct 2013 13:32

Iirc that crossing once opened for a very short time.
These days, not a chance, officially at least.
Remember: there is no state control in southern Libya now. It's the new 'north Mali'.

FYI: I was told a day or two ago that the regular areas around Djanet (Tadrart, Essendilene, Iherir) have opened - presumably to the fly-in market.
Nothing doing around Tam.

DJanet-Ghat dreamwalking

Yes Chris , I found the same news online for this area..
But can you assert DJanet-Ghat crossing post is abandoned / is not actually being used by locals ?

Yesterday I was reading Kevok , he is motorcycle N Libya now.. someone asked him ¨where you come from , don´t you see news ?!.. No , I don´t , I don´t want to , he said .

ciao

Quote:

… is not actually being used by locals ?
Tin Alkoum was used by locals before 2011, and now maybe too - let alone clandestine crossings.
But for a few Saharan countries, and Libya especially, only certain borders are open to non-African tourists. Occasionally there have been exceptions, and for a traveller with local languages, connections as well as incentives and a sense of adventure, anything is possible.

It is true that on the north Libyan transit on this forum we have not heard of overland tourists having problems or coming to harm, despite what makes the mainstream news here.
