Diff locks

Does anyone have them or have used them? For example ARB's?
Good experiences or bad are both of interest!

If you mean for desert driving then IMHO you dont need them (I tried my F&R OE locks once - no differance, its all in the soft tyres)
but for mud it may be a different story.

I'm mainly thinking as a general application (snow/mud etc.), not just for sand.
I got the kettle by the way, and will be trying it out soon!

Don't have any experience with lockers like the ARB. But I fitted my Disco with TrueTrac Limited Slip Differentials. They got me up the difficult dunes more easily, but were murder on the "flat" when there were lots of tracks just under the surface.

Based on my experience, Limited Slip Diffs are not a good idea for sand.

We have a detroit locker fitted to the rear axle (land rover 110) - did the job over last 22,000km (get through more often, although now get much more deeply stuck than I did before!). It does make some really nasty clunks if you use reverse after a long motorway section!!

Still working though?!?!

Hai,

Don't use a "limited slip dif" It won't help you when you get stuck. Use a "dif lock"
Very good is "air-locker", but a bit expensif.
"Diamond locker" is cheap and easy to install. It has one draw-back, it works automatic and when you take a sharp corner you feel the lock's "kick in" This is not comfy and the tyres don't like it. I used them on my front-axel, so with the free-hub disengaged, no problem on the road.
In rough terain it make's a real diferance.

We were travelling in the Libyan Sahara earlier this year. My LWB Land Rover with no diff locks, but Michelin XS at 1 bar. Kev's 110 had ARB's front and rear. When stuck in the soft stuff his dug itself in equally at all four corners as he sank a foot. Mine wafted over he top. Save your money.

Diff locks, BAD
Compressor, GOOD

In our 110 we have an ARB locker in the front we never use. In most cases they will not even fit/work in a Salisbury rear.

When driving on dunes in Morocco I got stuck. As I had only two sand ladders, I put one under each axle, locked the diffs and drove out without a hassle. Well, if I were more lucky, I wouldn't get stuck and so I would also say "save yourself some money". I will reserve my judgement, however, till I do more overlanding in more diversified conditions.
