Crossing to Mali from Mauritania

We are planning overland trip to West Africa, looking at the atlantic route, we have more or less worked out the route up to Mauritania.

What is the easiest crossing into Mali from Mauritania, easiest in terms of road conditions and ease of dealing with customs, police, etc.

Reading other overland journals, we have in mind from Kiffa-Kayes-Kita then Bamako.

Or Carry on to Nema and cross into Mali Armourj-Gombou-Bamako.

Any advise would be appreciated.

also planning atlantic crossing...

we are currently in southern spain and heading into Morocco and then South to West Africa.

Are you not concerned about the terrorist situation in Mauritania/Mali?

We are trying to figure out if crossing is still the best option for us.

Let us know what you think and if you cross, how it went and when you are planning to go.

Thanks,

Gael and Sonja

I and my wife go from W.Sahara to Mauritania 1 or 2 feb. Welcome!:welcome:
We go to Gambia.
Our first plan is 4 or 5 days in Mauritania (Nouadibou-Atar-Nuakshot and then to Mali), but now we can correct it.

We plan to enter Mauri (Nouadibou) from W Sahara on January the 28, heading then to Atar, Tidjidka, Nema and TombuctĂș. Two Landys 110, red and green. We can offer you a cold beer if we meet on the way.

crossing into Mali from Mauretania

My query is more to do with time, which border crossing is quicker and easier. I realise the recent concerns about south of Mauritania, but I am sure would become stable in the coming weeks and months.

The best place to cross borders is the road you mentioned, but it don't start in Kiffa. It is the new asphalt road Ayoun - Nioro. No hassle there.
