Crossing from Egypt to Sudan

I've read a lot of old entries on getting from Egypt and they all point to the ferry/ barge crossing from Aswan. I cannot find any information on an open land route. Can anybody clarify this issue? Has anybody done it by road? Any info greatly appreciated

At the moment there is no legal overland border crossing between Egypt & Sudan, only option is the Wadi Halfa ferry.

There has been intermittent talk of opening up the Red Sea border crossing at Shalatein, but for the time being that route requires special permits that regular travelers will not receive.

crossed by ferry from aswan south in may. you can drive further south than aswan to the famous abu simbel temple (only 50km from the sudan border)but of course they wont let you drive any further and the ferry doesnt stop here so you have to drive back up again.
watch your timing as the ferry only leaves once weekly and be prepared for an expensive crossing on the vehicle ferry (not to be confused with the weekly passenger ferry).
good luck crossing the nubian desert after halfa, enjoy...

Any updates on crossing?

Is the Red Sea road still closed to regular travellers? Would be nice to avoid the expensive and long ferry from Aswan to Wadi Halfa. Also, if it must be the ferry, is there any possibility of getting on further south rather than in Aswan?

Any and all help appreciated!

I was just researching this subject this week as it happens and as far as I understand it's still only Aswan to Wadi H.

Do a search for Wadi Halfa etc on:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...aharan-africa/

There was a good contact there a few months old from Nick T to smooth the ferry and Sudan entry. You'll need it.

I've recently crossed from Wadi Halfa to Aswan and it is the only legal crossing between egypt and Sudan.

The passenger ferry crosses once per week. Dont know when it comes from Aswan south but it leaves Wadi Halfa on Wed eve's at around Five.
I got my bike on the passenger ferry, there is room for about three maybe four bikes so you can be lucky and get it on.

A good contact in wadi halfa is a guy called Magdi 00 249 121730885.
He is a kind of travel agent /fixer.
you will have to pay him but he really can get things done.
He is an uncle of the well known Midhat Mahir in Karthoum, another great guy - 00249 912253485

let me know if there is anything else I can do
