Carnet on egypt/sudan border

Hi guys,

Was hoping to hear from anybody who had any up-to-date information on this. I have read that you can put a deposit of 2000 euros down at the border if you dont have a carnet. Is this true?
Has anyone heard of this working or even better has anyone done this?
Also does anyone know how you would go about getting your deposit back as one leaves the lybian/egypt border?

Many thanks

Midhat Mathir had a convoluted story of how he'd helped someone manage this. Sounded like a total nightmare and could have gone wrong. The process seemed made up as they went along and I would say is definitely not recommended.

Search for Midhat and try and get in touch, he may have some ideas.
Sorry I cann't be more helpful

MIdhat is a very good guy and will definitely help you and he is straight.
However his interrpretation on frustration and hardship is a lot more laid back than most people's .
I would NOT try this crossing without a carnet and i would be prepared for a lot of frustraion on the Egyptian side, they are a night mare, just devastatingly slow and inefficient.

One tip is if you scream and shout and really loose the head with them, they seem to react and make things move faster... that's what i did at least, so dont blame me if you get arrested
Seriiously , please dont try the crossing without a carnet

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
