Cosidering a job in Libya, how motorcyle friendly?

Hi,

I spent 6 years in Egypt, 3 in the UAE and am considering a position in Libya. Have lots of desert experience and would be greatful for any info for the following:

1) Easy (or relative ease) to import a bike? Customs?

2) Access to the desert? Are there restrictions? Free to travel at will? I once heard you needed to have a guide, if so, is it easy to get around this. When I lived in Egypt we learned what the offical "rules" were but then there is also the "unofficial" line.

3) Are there any expats living there that ride off-road?

Thanks, Steve

Hi

First of all You must be a resident, means that You must have a work ’s registered local contract.
After six months you can ask for an import licence. Only one allowed during each the permit of residence (for bike up to 50% of value to 100€ according engine capacity.) Anyway bikes are considered luxury goods.
Access in the desert.? Same as tourists when off road.
Unofficial rule in Libya? Ask those who didn’t follow and learned about the results.
Some expats of different countries use to organizes 4x4 and bike’s jamboree each Friday near Sabratha.

Thanks for the info

Budrinna,

When you say..."Only one allowed during each the permit of residence" does that mean because my wife and I will each have a local contract we could each bring in one bike?

What were the results of unauthorized travel?

Are you part of a tour operation?

Thanks, Steve

Means that only one import 's permit is authorized for single work's contract (minum of two years). So you are allowed with two bikes is your wife owns a contrat at her name.

result is ..that at least you risk a fine or a temporary stop i bike's circulation according to the deggre of tne unrespect of the offcial regultion. Here different than Egypt.

part of o Tour operator ? no but of a local consultant foreign bureau .

ok.......

So lets say my wife and I each have resident visas and we have legally imported two bikes. On a weekend day could we do a 100 km crusie through the desert and then come back without a problem? Surely we would not pay some local guide 100 euros for a 3 hour cruise through the desert.

Thanks, Steve

As resident you can travel all Libya on macadam.

Out of it and mainly in desert areas you are subject to the local regulation that is the same as for the tourist'one.
