Coastal Road: How bad roads are?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get a better understanding of the roads condition for motorcycle riding between Dakhla and Nouadhibou. I read the "worst" section is the last 30km or so before Nouadhibou. How bad is it? Are we talking about very deep soft sand, or some some of hard piste covered with sand? Anyone who can give more details on this (especially from a recent ride in 2002 or 2002) would be most helpful!

Thanks a lot!

Hi!!!
it is definitely doable in a motorbike . The road is tarmac until the Moroccan side of the border. Then a few miles of destroyed (potholed) road - Stick to it as there may be still some land-mines- . From the Mauritanian-side border to Nouadibou its 20-30 miles of easy to follow tracks . A nice-easy enjoyable ride , with the occasional sand spot , but nothing to worry about . I have seen doing it even in bycicle.

have fun .

...absolutely - it's goodish road all the way down to the mori border and then mostly broken up road followed by easy track. there is one short section of soft sand just after the border post - it's no problem on a bike at all, but a couple we met in a Rover Montego (british family saloon car of 80's vintage) did get stuck for a little while :-) in other words... no problem!!

the coastal route onward to Nouakchott is pretty straightforward too.
