Cheap CARNET in Spanish's RACE!

Hi all !!! . I am just getting ready and sorting the last issues for a MAdrid CapeTown trip starting next April.

When appliying for a Carnet in the RACE (Spanish equivalent to RAC , ADAC , etc) ... I was surprised.. that -for a 90' Suzuki Jeep - the deposit is about 600 EUR !!!! + (plus about 100 EUR of the document itself!) .
Apparently ... the vehicles' values are computed using some obsolete depreciation table ... (something like 5-7 percent of the vehicles' NEW value .. if it is older than 10 years !) . Also ... one must not deposit that money ... instead ... we must pay to the bank a little money for assuring that the whole money will be paid if the carnet is honoured ...

So ... -in my case ... for a 90 Suzuki SJHT
Cost of the carnet 100E + 50E (RACE's yearly membership) +80E (of the bank's services) .
In the case the carnet's money is reclaimed .. then I 'd had to pay to the bank the remainder of the 600E.

"appaerntly" ... they *must* issue carnets also for all UE nationals / cars ...etc.. *

Could you please include some contact details for them? Website, email addresses, contact names, phone numbers, fax numbers and especially any names or email addresses of people that speak languages other than spanish (ie: english ;-)

After weeks of "waiting " .. I got my nice CDP ...
They told me that they can issue a Carnet for any EU citizen .. but only for Spanish Registered cars.... Also ... Carnets will be only given to the legal OWner of the car.

Also ... they told me that cars dont' need to have a valid MOT certificate to get the CDP !!! .

They definitely won't speak english . They insisted that , while it is perfectly possible to issue a CDP to any EU citizen .. the car has to be Spanish registered . (that 's not that difficult , I have done it for private purposes for less than 130 UKP for a '98 Mondeo , and 80 UKP for a '74 Spartan Roadster ) .
Assuming the car is fairly "roadworthy" it took less than 3 days .

Even then ... insurance is much , much cheapier .. so may be an option...

If you find any difficulties with the Language I will gladly traslate it for you .

Silly question I feel but is it possible register a bike which is currently registered in the UK, in Spain without a Spanish address?

Hi !!! . It is definitely possible . In Spain .. .the vehicle literature is not that much "address deppendant" as in UK . In order to register / buy / sell / etc... one must go to the Spanish's DVLA ,-IN PERSON- , unlike UK which - I remember- was impossible to "own" a vehicle without a valid postal Address .
Lots of turists (specially Britishs) own a Spanish car without much hassle
. Actually , and for a motorbike it should be even simpler as most of the money involved while exporting /registering an UK car , goes to buying a set of LHD Headlamps (which are different from the UK spec) . I dont thing you have to change anything in a motorbike .

therefore I think it is perfectly possible .
If you are interested , I can ask what the deposit would be for a Motorbike ...

As I understand it, most carnet issuers don't really mind what value you state for your vehicle.

The carnet is just a guarantee to the country you are visiting, that the Issuer will pay the outstanding customs duties (if the vehicle is not re-exported) to the maximum value shown on the carnet.

It is up to the Customs Dep't of each country to decide if that guarantee is adequate or not. Therefore the carnet issuer will usually have some suggested guidelines about the minimum value you should allow for, to make sure your carnet is not rejected. If you understate your value by a ridiculous amount, the carnet can be refused.

I guess most often, just having a valid carnet is 90% of the battle, and I'm all in favour of cheaper carnets, but just be careful about carnets that are cheap because they "allow" unrealistically low vehicle values.

do they actually inspect the vehicle - or would it be possible to fly from UK to Madrid, register the veicle using the ownership docs and then insure europe wide and get carnet while in Spain, before returning to UK to begin trip?

. . .or am I dreaming??!

Just to say that I am currently living in Madrid and will happily help anyone with this if needed. I myself have a British registered XT600e here with me which I hope to use to go to Africa at the end of the year. I will also look into this for myself nearer the time but if anyone needs something done in Madrid I can do it.

No ... unfortunately ... they need to reMOT the vehicle .... -its a light MOT , compared to the British ones ... , but the vehicle must be seen physically .

Anyway ... It is quite easy .. and I can not see any problenms to actually register the car as Spanish ... this ..bring 2 more benefits:

1 Cheaper Insurance ... (really , much much cheaper)
2 In my personal experience , Spanishs car / people are seen with "better eyes" by African locals , . British are often mistaken by Americans , which is definitely a bad thing in Africa. I have been overlanding with cars registered in Spain and in UK , and I can confirm that .

So .. may be registering the car in Spain "on the fly" -that is- during the trip , before actually crossing to Africa , is not that bad idea.....

I can happily help anyone interested in that issue , as I have done it several times.

I live in Portugal, and I intend to make a overland trip, from Portugal to Mozambique.
As you know the Carnet the Passage on Duane, CPD, is one of the documents to carry along.
I only registered today on HUBB site, due to a link that someone sent to me, on the subject of the CPD.
Reading your post’s, I realize that you have good information about how things move in Spain, regarding, at least, this subject.

My questions to you are:
1 - Can I register my jeep in Spain?
2- What do I have to do? For me, living in Portugal, the border is only 2,5 hours away.
3- For a 10 years’ jeep, do you have any idea of the costs? Registration, and subsequently, the insurance and the CPD?
