Chad bans Landcruiser pick-ups

News for anyone planning on doing a trip in the desert in Chad.....

The government in Chad has banned the use of Landcruiser pickups. They may only be used by the military.

"Any ownership of an all-terrain Land Cruiser pick-up is banned across the territory except those owned by the administration, by NGOs, by diplomats and by traditional chiefs," Public Security Minister Ahmat Mahamat Bashir.

Its not clear what would happen if you pitched up in your own cruiser - or what they are planning to do with anyone who already has one. Desperate measures it seems.

In your link says:

"The owners of such pick-ups should "deliver them to the administrative authorities" so that an "ad hoc commission (can make) an evaluation of the worth of the vehicles and pay compensation to owners who have proved their rightful claim," the statement added."

Thanks for pointing this out Pera - I'd missed the explanation. I'd guess there will be heated arguments about the value!

Sounds like a PR stunt to further boost sales of TLC technicals. I was actually thinking of buying one, although with no plans for Chad so far.

I wonder if the teacher quoted at the bottom of the article has one - why was he picked for a quote?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
